Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

For Blazer newbies, from a Blazer newbie

Hello there, Blazer newbie!  Welcome to the Blazer's Edge.  I'm sure you heard the big news about the one pick.  Maybe you're a Buckeye fan who loves Greg Oden and wants to keep an eye on him?  Or maybe you just haven't watched the NBA that closely lately, and now you feel like you might be able to get back into it, thanks to the dynamic duo of Durant and Oden?

So you're thinking about potentially becoming a Blazer fan.

Star-divide

I was in your shoes a year ago.  As a kid, I grew up rooting for the Bad Boy Pistons.  Yes, ok, you can hate me for that.  But I grew up close to Detroit, so what can I say?  Eventually, I grew disenchanted, primarily because I discovered that, yes, Bill Lambier was an evil sonuvabitch.  And Dennis Rodman went from being the worm to being, well, whatever that was.  And the college game had much less of that crap, so I started watching college ball.  When the Pistons got good again, I shrugged.  It seemed artificial, almost contrived.    So I didn't go back.

I went to a rinkadink little school to get my bachelor's degree, and, while I kept up an affinity for Big Ten basketball, I was far removed from it.  Then I had the good fortune of attending the University of Washington just as Lorenzo Romar began turning that team around, thanks in part to Brandon Roy.

I became a big fan of the UW team, and of BRoy in particular.  I was disappointed when Nate Robinson left early and abandoned a team that could've had a shot at the title.  And I remained a big supporter of Roy.  When the Blazers bent heaven and earth to pick him up, my interest was piqued.

Oh, the Blazers!  That team that took on the Bad Boy mantle after the Pistons went soft.  Rip City, right?  Small market team, good town.  Terrible record, true, but now they've got Brandon Roy.  And, hell, I was used to rooting for crappy teams.  Tiger baseball, anyone?  I was moving back to the East Coast, but, what the hell, maybe I'll watch them this year.

Let me tell you, Blazer Newbie, it was a helluva ride.  For a while, there, I thought we'd actually make the playoffs!  I haven't felt this good about a team that finished this badly since, well, never.  And, the icing on the cake, Roy was R.O.Y., and now they're going to grab (fingers in ears to Durant-supporters) Greg Oden.  What a great core of solid young players!

So, if you're thinking about becoming a Blazer fan, let me say welcome aboard.  Next year you'll probably be able to see them on TV more often, thanks to Oden.  And, the people on this site, good folks.  Plus, I actually won a contest for picking games and got a little prize sent, totally free.  That was awesome.

Grade School.

I was 8 when we won it all in '77 and I still remember watching the games on our little 19" B&W TV.  I still get chills remembering The Fight.

And I'm still (to this day) pissed off that CBS switched from the game to golf immediately after the Blazers won game 6.

My first NBA team was the Bad Boys
I still love that team.

But I moved from Michigan in 1997 and adopted the Trailblazers.  It's different out here...

Kevin Pritchard Era
I've been a fan of the Blazers since the beginning of the Kevin Pritchard era. I went to college in Portland and had been a very casual Knicks fan up until then. A friend took me to one game at the end of Scottie Pippen's run with the team and the energy and excitement in the Rose Garden was really impressive. I remember there was a series of great plays at both ends of the court where you got that great crescendo effect where the crowd just gets louder and louder and louder until the opposing team has to call a time out. After that game I didn't instantly become a Blazer fan but I was definitely intrigued by the NBA experience.

It wasn't until the Mo Cheeks firing that I finally committed. I started going to games by myself and really trying to soak in the whole thing and learn about being a basketball fan. I saw nearly every home game coached by Kevin Pritchard. I saw nearly every minute of Ha Seung Jin's NBA career. It was awesome. They lost all the time but they were fun to watch. It was frustrating for the old school who were used to exellence and polish but for me, it was perfect. They sucked most of the time and occasionally got it together. For a new student of the game, really bad play is almost as instructive as really good play.

Since then it's been nothing but good news. KP's the perfect GM, Nate's the perfect coach, Roy's the perfect player, and this draft pick is the perfect way to end these past few years of being runts in the league. We're players now and for the foreseeable. I can't wait to see what comes next.

This is how I learned the value of how good teams

It's funny you say that because retrospective is such an important tool. Especially if you can appreciate how hard it is to win 50 games in the NBA. Old school fans remember the playoffs every year. But if you're a fan of the recent vintage Blazers you don't have that luxury. Especially if most of what you remember previously is the JB era.

You've forgotten
or perhaps not known, that some of us are no longer in our twenties.  Or thirties or ...

I became a Blazer fan after I was out of the college, but that was hardly "just recently".  So I didn't vote :-)

I was a Blazer fan BEFORE the lottery.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
