me too
Portland #1 window is still up for me too.  My buddy printed off his #1 pick window.  Maybe I'll make a t-shirt out of it.

Thanks for keeping this thread open

Tonight...
I will be staying at work late (to keep my eye on the lottery) and I will look busy (although it will be nerves).

My boss is sure to be impressed.

3 clicks on mock lottery
It took me 3 clicks on the mock lottery to get Durant at #2 for our boys. Let it come true, PLEASE.
This is kinda like Christmas & freaking New Year's rolled into one....

GO BLAZERS!

I wonder how many times I'm gonna end up blowing my voice out at the Blazer games next season?

EWWWWWWW
Steven A. Smith is doing commentary for ESPN right now.  His voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me right now.

Oh, and his analysis always sucks.

So Junit and Trojanskier

Thanks dor the reminder!
Aside from the bi-weekly head shave, I just ran and put on my Roy jersey & Blazer ballcap from opening night this year. As always, when the wife gets home, she's gonna shake her head and call me 'Fanboy'.

Do I mind? Not at all.

Just send David Stern
your bank account number and a cashier's check for $5000, and he'll ensure the Blazers land Odurant.

by EngineerScotty on May 22, 2007 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The more I see and hear of David Stern
the less I like him.  I always half respected him despite the controversy but I'm leaning less that way as time goes on.  I don't care if he is a lawyer, brilliant, powerful, and a bully...if he wants to debate back and forth about some of these issues I will absolutely go with him anywhere, anytime.  Of course he doesn't allow people to ask him real questions or engage him in real debates so small chance of that...besides the obvious.

To All The Blazers Fans...
... congrats on getting the first overall pick and the rights to one helluva center... yeah, c'mon, you know you guys have to take Greg Oden, right?  Hahaha.  It's like saying Scarlett Johansson is pretty.

Seriously, the team will be on the way back to the playoffs, even in the very tough Western Conference.  At the very least, Oden will get a ton of boards and block a lot of balls right off the bat. Add a healthy LaMarcus Aldridge, a versatile Brandon Roy, and I can't think of a better trio of youngsters.

Simply, wow.

Looking forward to following the team right here on what I think is not only one of the best Blazers blogs, but basketball blogs, period.

Savor the moment then move on... because it's only going to get better.

The only downside:
Our neighbors to the north are going to end up with either the rookie of the year(Durant) or Oden (if K.P. picks smart). I despise the Seattle teams.

OK, how would this look?

Center: Aldridge, Joel
PF: Zach/Aldridge/Travis
SF: Durant/Imme/Travis
SG: Roy
PG: Jack/Sergio

Big time scorers: Durant, Zach and Roy
Do everything player: Aldridge
Excitement off the bench: Travis
Filling out a complete team: Jack, Imme and Joel.
Future: Sergio

I almost wrecked!
I had to pull off the road twice, I couldn't even hear any of the picks after #6 until everybody went crazy at #1.  I got so excited I got tears a couple of times.

Go Blazers!

I've got to be honest
After it was established we were in the top 3 I was almost hoping we would get 2...That's how much I like Durant.  I've seen him absolutely TAKE OVER games like when he was draining 3 after 3 and single handedly keeping his team in the game against Kansas...I just never saw Oden take over like that.

c'mon you KNOW we have to take Oden
Remember, Oden was playing with a broken shooting hand.

And we have BROY to take over games.

Roy is the next Wade.

We need the big man to get to the top.

because this draft is all ive been thinking about for months. i mean, i watched texas vs texas a&m for research.

this is like going to las vegas and counting on WINNING. it's unreal.

what's funny is now there are so many permutations to consider. like: if we take greg oden and start lamarcus at PF, then doesn't that mean goodbye zach?

(and then hello rashard lewis?)

Taking Over Games
I definitely think that Oden has that ability right now, but not offensively ala Jordan or Kobe or Durant in college.  Oden will change games defensively from his sheer presence down in the box.

He has all the mechanics to be a great shotblocker in the NBA, such as keeping his arms straight up as not to foul (yeah, I know he was in foul trouble during the NCAAs, but trust me) and he has great instincts, as not to bite on many shot fakes.

Plus he'll get a ton of boards playing in the middle.  Remember, Oden has an NBA-ready body.  Kevin Durant does not.  I think he'll develop into the guy he often gets compared to, but just like Dirk Nowitzki, I think it'll take him some time to meet any expectations.  Durant needs to work out... and growing a beard to make it look like he saw Star Wars when it came out in the theatres the first time could help.

Oden won't be required to take over games, though
Oden has the ability to take over games, but Oden won't be won't walk into the NBA being forced to completely take over games like David Robinson, Pat Ewing, Shaq, Jordan, and LeBron had to.

Oden walks onto a team that has most of the pieces in place on lottery night, and will most likely have all the pieces in place his first regular season game.

5-9-14-13 were the Oden Powerball numbers... by the way.

The lucky Oden
Just wanted to congratulate every blazer fan out there. I'm a kings fan (but i have family in portland who no doubt will be asking me about this) but I gotta say im happy for everybody in portland. Yall needed something like this. Oden is the guy that everybody loves and you should enjoy him for 15 years or so. Seattle is so lucky also in my opinion (i have to congratulate supersonic soul but after i stop off here im going to do so)but yall are the real winners.

First off let me drop off a trade scenario for anybody who notices this: Zach Randolph for Brevin Knight. Before you call me crazy remember this. Knight has a team option that can be terminated before aug 1st. In otherwords you can trade z-bo to charlotte and get cap room. Then anybody like say Rashard Lewis could sign with you? Anybody like the idea? yes or no?

Either way I hope oden exercises the ghost of the big redhead. Good Luck. Dave I enjoy the blog when i get to read it. I have a feeling im going to be doing a lot of it during the summer. Thanks for all the good info.

PS: I think yall make the nba better. I dont give a rats ass about the knicks or the celtics. I do kinda love the blazers (i first started watching hoop cuz of the TP/Drexler editions) and of course have much to thank the blazer organization for (and the stupidity of paul allen) as well. So thank you portland.

Chemistry Test
K.P. will draft on chemistry. He said on the radio afterwards that he would base a lot of his decision on who to draft on how the interview went with Durant and Oden. that's why we got Roy last year. obviously either one of these 2 guys would help us from a purely basketball standpoint. K.P. will make sure we get the winner, a teammate, and clutch performer. We're in good hands PDX!!

ps: on that note get ready for ticket prices to shoot up like our sex appeal.....

Draft Interviews

Makes one wonder what the Blazers would do if KP somehow came away unimpressed from his interviews with Durant and Oden. Not that I expect this to happen, but what if...?

by iCollective on May 22, 2007 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well if one of them doesn't want
to come to PDX all they have to do is tank the interview. I think Oden should be the pick. It's a lot easier to pick up a great small forward through a trade than it is a big man...

by Blazerholic on May 22, 2007 7:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's alot easier
It is a ton easier to pick up a SF thru FA too.
Either way the blazers are in a beautiful position here.

That's the truth

i don't think it's impossible
that oden may have some attitude problems. i'm not wishing for this, i'm not predicting, i'm just harmlessly speculating. he seems like he may be a brooder.

and one little red flag may be this business about him wanting his pal mike conley jr to be his personal PG in the pros.

whereas kevin durant would plug right into our SF hole and might lead the league in scoring without especially hogging the ball. plus he rebounds. we would have an awesome front line (retaining zach and travis as 6th man).

durant's personality might be more suited to the nba.

kevin pritchard and nate will get to know these guys. they went after brandon and lamarcus last year basically because of who they were (are).

Oden
It's worth noting that some people have called Tim Duncan a "brooder." To me, that can also mean that he's a serious, stoic competitor who has his emotions under control.

by iCollective on May 22, 2007 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Conley
I think people are reading WAY too much into that comment.

Remember high school when you wanted all your best friends to go to the same college as you?

Well, keep in mind Oden is only 19 years old. On top of that, it was a single comment.

What wrong with hoping you get to play with your best friend in the NBA? Is it so odd that he might even drop a couple of comments that might help make that happen?

I've seen so much speculation based on this completely understandable comment blown way out of porportion, going from a hopeful comment about playing with a buddy to him being a Kobe Bryant/Eli Manning throwing a post-draft tantrum to force trades.

Give the guy a break!  He seems like a quality guy. Humble, and a good teammate. I'm excited he'll be an Oregonian.

sitting in boston...
and celtics fans are in shock - which is a little strange considering boston had less than a 40% chance at the top 2 and the difference between 3-5 in this draft isn't really that big.

immediately got a call from a buddy who i grew up with in portland.  sounds like PDX is going nuts.  i'm definitely getting the NBA package next year.  i'm kind of rooting for the blazers to take durant, unless they can pull a zach-rashard deal.  go blazers!

Finally, we'll get some dunks on a regular basis.
Oden will bring the dunk back to Portland. monster dunks. we haven't had enough of those lately. Durant is great, but we already have a great jump shooting big-man in LaMarcus. We need someone with the skill and size to dominate the rim, and Oden is that man. Of course, getting Lewis will make it a lot easier to make the decision.

my take
now that my emotions are settling down a little and I've had time to think about it, I've come to the realization that Oden is the right player for us. think about it... which teams are in the final four right now?  The Spurs have had a mini dynasty with Timmy, and the Pistons are in their 5th straight conference finals. If we pick Oden we model ourselves more along the lines of the Spurs and Pistons. (Ben Wallace, the Big Fundamental, etc). If we pick Durant we will look more like the Mavs or Suns, who both got bounced. if we want rings we need to go big. of course K.P. said on ESPN he wants to spread the floor next year so who knows?

Oden is saying the right stuff
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2007/news/story?id=2879722

i know, he kinda has that caveman look going for him (looking about 35 years old at age 19), but he seems, not just in this brief piece, but in other interviews, to be a very serious, intelligent guy. i was very impressed with his poise and attitude in the NCAA finals this year. I think he is a Nate kind of guy.

Somebody Pinch Me...

When Portland made the Final three, I was thinking "Man, it would suck to get #3 and just miss Oden/Durant"  But then I thought, well, we could trade the #3 pick and still be in great shape.

Then Atlanta was #3.....Holy Cow, we've made the Top Two!

Then Seattle was #2...and I was thrusting my right fist in the air and shouting "Yes! Yes! Yes!" at the TV...my wife thought I was crazy...

I just hope Pritchard doesn't over think this.  Just take Oden and go from there.  I've seen some comments already that if Portland takes Oden over Durant, they run the risk of repeating the Bowie over Jordan mistake.  I don't see that...nobody blames Houston for taking Hakeem #1 that year.  This is a similar situation.

Feeling giddy about being a Portland fan for the first time in nearly a decade!

by Steele15 on May 22, 2007 10:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That's a great point Steele
Nobody remembers Olajuwon was the first pick. That was totally understandable on Houston's part. I really think the mistake on Portland's part was not taking Otis Thorpe? Maybe Charles Barkley? Either guy would have fit much better. This is proof how much the draft can be a crapshoot.

It's a true Cinderella story. We were laughed and mocked for the Jail Blazers, we've had our share of heartbreaks and had the threat of the team moving looming over our heads, Canzano....

Let the good times begin.
