Potential trade - would you do this?
This isn't sexy or earth shattering but it's fairly reasonable and likely helps both teams. I was a little surprised with Zach getting the boot in the YBGM voting but I guess perception is reality. Against that backdrop, here's the trade:
Atlanta gets:
-Zach
-a second rounder or DD if necessary to even things out (if DD is included, it has to be Williams to fit under the cap)
Portland gets:
-Josh Smith or Josh Childress or Marvin Williams
-Lorenzen Wright
-Anthony Johnson
-Atlanta's 2007 first round pick, preferrably the 3rd if they get it; the 11th if not. (very unlikely they give up the 1st or 2nd on this deal)
-a future first round pick with varying levels of protection to even things out
Why Atlanta does it:
A strong inside presence to compliment Joe and the kids; two all stars in the east ain't bad. They've needed inside help forever and would still have plenty of youth on the wings so the loss of the picks is easier to swallow.
Why Portland does it:
Somewhat appease the masses by moving Z, open things up to be more team oriented, improved defense, and free up time for LA. We add some veteran presence in the form of role players at two of our need positions (1 & 5) with only one year left on the contracts for Wright & Johnson so if they don't work out you've rented mentors for a season and free up cap space. I'd probably take Smith, Childress, or Williams in that order. None of these guys necessarily blow my socks off, but you'd have to consider them an upgrade at the 3. The 2007 pick gives us two shots at a keeper in a deep draft or the chance to trade the picks together and move up and get one guy we really like. Either way you add to the core this year and have another chip next year.
This works according to RealGM Trade Checker: http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/1/ (don't forget DD = Williams)
I'd like to think we could get more for Zach but the reality is there is no way we can deal with Chicago without a 3rd team and that makes it highly unlikely. I know a lot of people like Lewis but it's just incredibly unlikely Seattle trades with us or vice versa given the rivalry, within division, and any lingering hard feelings regarding Nate. That leaves us with limited options if we want to move Zach but this one might work.

Depends on who we get
Ignoring the draft picks (which may be a deal-breaker), there is a big difference between Childress, Williams, and Smith.
Josh Smith is one of the best defensive SFs in the game. He's also a bit of a loose cannon.
Josh Childress is a decent-enough player, but a considerable drop in talent from the other Josh.
Marvin is an interesting prospect--a guy with a lot of promise (and who some considered the top prospect in the '05 draft) who has yet to consistently demonstrate NBA ability. He's also been hurt a lot.
Plus, I doubt the Hawks would give up two #1s--especially a top 3 pick in this draft--to land Zach. (I'd love it if they did...)
In addition, there is still the Hawks' ownership issue which needs to be resolved--I think major deals with the Hawks are off (by court injunction) until the lawsuit is settled.

yeah I would
the above stated reasons
maybe if you made it more fair for the hawks it'd be more reasonable, but the ownership thing is still a huge deal there.
I'd do Jack and Randolph for their #12, Marvin Williams, and the other guys personally, but no one else on the forum probably would.

Wow, how far have the mighty fallen?
I haven't seen as much of Josh Smith as I should so I've got no problem taking him off the table.
The ownership thing I hadn't accounted for, it's still under injunction? Wasn't that going on last year when they acquired Johnson and it's still not resolved?
Anyway, if I'm understanding you guys Zach's not worth an undeveloped 3, a couple of 1st rounders, and spare parts. Again: Wow, how far have the mighty fallen?

well...
He is paid a lot, and this draft is very very deep.

If you haven't paid attention to Josh Smith
He's young and going to be an all star for sure. He can be elite... possibly a superstar, but that could be stretching it.
The point is... he's a key element to Atlanta's future and snagging him would be a huge win for us.

Josh Smith
On NBA.com's overall player rankings across the usual 8 statistical categories, Josh Smith ranks as the #16 best player in the league. Zach comes in at #57.
Even without salary considerations, I would choose Smith over Zach, straight up, anytime. To think that someone would toss in two 1st round picks as well ?????????

Do it
Frankly, anything else included with him is gravy.
I wouldn't do it for any of the other players. I don't like them. Injuries and they're not that good.

Josh Smith
As good as he is, I can't imagine KP going after him. I'd target Childress and Zaza Pachulia as likely targets for KP, but they're not worth even talking about Zbo, unless they add high picks.
