are the blazers better w/o randolph?
i think this is a fact: aldridge is a more effective power forward than randolph. after just half a season he has established himself as a dominant offensive player and solid defensive presence.
what do you guys think?
in other news... how about them ducks. porter shot a 3-pointer percentage that few players can match, but the team still came close to blowing it down the stretch. do the ducks have any chance of topping the defending champs and noah? can they drop 3s faster than florida can draw fouls and get points in the paint?

I dont think so.
You get that moniker after doing it for multiple seasons.
LaMarcus has incredible PROMISE. Zach Randolph is one of the top 30 players in the league.
More effective? maybe against The knicks, hawks and wiz. Three Horrible defensive teams. Does he command doubles?
Dominant offensive player?
I understand that your excited, but hold your horses.
It's a classic example of Ewing Theory
But I honestly do think the Blazers are better without him. Look at the Sixers after Iverson and Webber left or the Pistons after Stackhouse left. Now these aren't perfect examples but it does highlight the point that sometimes teams play better without the star or alleged star.
It's not all Zach's fault of course. He gives the team a lot of open looks but due to our lack of great shooters Zach gets shafted on assists. But I do think that the Blazers just play more efficent when they don't have to focus on feeding Zach in the post.
I think having Zach on the team for the next season is okay, we need a mix of experinced guys like Zach and young guys but I just can't see a long-term future for Zach in Portland.
I'm trying to not let this be a knee-jerk reaction to the three wins. I've always felt this way. When I found out Zach was going on beravement leave my first gut reaction was that we we're going to play better. This wasn't anything vindictive against Zach but an honest gut reaction.

I agree
That said, I don't feel we're at a place... YET... where he does more harm than good.
I feel we're fast approaching and will be there by next year if he doesn't continue to learn and grow.
I hesitate to toss him now because he HAS grown ALOT this season. The difference is amazing. He still has bad moments or games, but there's progress. He WANTS to be here.
Ultimately I'd like to know what his team really thinks and i'd go with that. Based on what I've seen, I'd like to continue giving zach a chance. This is different than how i felt at the beginning of the year. It's a testament to how much i feel he's improved.
Now... that said... if we some how drafted another player that created a bottle neck at pf... my inclination is that we trade Zach.
I don't see anything out there or a chance of us aquiring a rookie that will make me want to do that though.
Two different questions.
Yes--or will be, at least, very soon, and from that point on.
2) Are the Blazers better without Zach?
No.
Although LaMarcus is (or soon will be) a slight upgrade over Zach at power forward,
it's more than offset by how much worse we are at center with Not-LaMarcus,
no matter who that is (unless the pingy-pongs roll well and we land Oden).
Plus, Zach and LMA really compliment each other well;
they play together as a frontcourt big man pair really well,
which will only get better as they get more familiar with each other.
Remember, they've only been that starting big pair for just weeks now;
teams gel over the course of years.
That is, the COMBINATION of PF-Zach and C-LMA is better than
any non-Oden combination of PF-LMA and C-someone else,
even though PF-LMA is better than PF-Zach.
These are NOT the same questions!
Exactly
next year I'm hopeful that Zach will continue working hard and improving on DEFENSE. I really hope so.
I really hope this benching doesn't destroy his moral and drive towards the end of the year.
One thing ot keep in mind
Does this make sense? It's kind of more of a feeling I'm talking out than something already mentally articulated.

These last few comments are all
Jaseyfield I'm pretty sure I'm all in with your take, well put.
Quality Pie, you are right-on that there are two different questions to wrestle with. What I am not convinced about is that any combonation of PF-Zach and C-Lamarcus is better than any non-Oden combo of PF-LMA and someone else at C. I am sensitive about universals. Not to mention that given LMA's unique abilities we do not need to replace in this method, we can look at replacing PF or C for Lamarcus to work.
Plus, when freeing up the money tied up in Zach is there not a possibility that we have immediate or near-future options and opportunities that we didn't previously have to improve in substantial ways in related or unrelated areas. In a few years from now what will the combo of Zach - PF and LMA - C be costing us (along side Brandon, hopefully a Sergio who has an unbelievable future on horizion and whoever else is fortunate enough to be on the team)? Will we be able to afford a second unit and reserves that are strong enough to take us into contender status?
Another thing to consider: A year ago Joel had a problem with Zach, Zach was the person that needed to go if Joel was to stay... obviously Joel changed his mind or was bluffing, but it was still said. Zach has done a lot to prove his worth this season and I tip my hat to him. Perhaps he convinced Joel... perhaps not. Zach has "wowed" me this year and wish nothing but the best for him. If Joel resigned with the Blazers under the stipulation that the Blazers assured him off the record that Zach was not long for this team, is that at all responsible for the "please take me out of this game because if you don't I'll commit fouls more rapidly than Ha" play we saw from Joel when he was "healthy" this year. I do not know the answer to this question, but think if moving Zach would get us back Joel of old, I'd love to see healthy, hard-working, smart, team playing Joel get some C time with Lamarcus paired up at PF with him. In fact I think that we could be in a really interesting situation where teams are focused on keeping Brandon and LMA away from the basket and guarded, slightly nervous about Ime hitting threes, and if Martell is on the same holds true for him. Joel may be sitting open under the basket regularly, and have some low hanging fruit to grab.
I am not prepared to answer these questions but can't help but consider that Joel may be a BIG piece of this equation. Will he return (and not as a shell of his former self)? If he does what will that mean? Will we know if he will return w/o moving Zach first? What was going on this year? It certianly would give us worlds more options w/o an extra penny spent... then we can use the pieces (hopefully many of them near-expiring contracts, especially if we aren't getting much stat value or true team play in return) that we acquired in the Zach trade to either slowly but surely cut away our salaries, giving us more FA and trade options or to try to trade for one more C or PF that will truly fit in with the system we are setting up and may not need as much "Me Time" as Zach (aka fine with the emerging centerpieces of the team remaining the centerpieces of the team).
Tough questions to answer. Earlier this year this question was an easy one for me to answer... team better w/o Zach, net loss... He has done enough this year to put me on the fence on that one. I was always concerned over signing Joel again for health reasons though knew that we beggers couldn't be choosers when it came to a C at the close of last season and immediately post draft. However when he was healthy his play never concerned me much until this season. Now I am all confused....
Slightly OT - and a comment
And re Zach ... Mike Tokito says "...was at a Northeast Portland strip club Tuesday night, but had simply stopped in briefly before catching a red-eye flight to his hometown, a team official said." link
I'm betting Zach is going to take this benching --and the resulting "better than Zach?" combination of Aldridge & Magloire as a challenge - no matter the reason for the non-start. He came back strong after the suspension and I think he's matured enough to do the same in this situation.
I hope you're right, Jorga...
I have never hoped so hard that I am wrong, but I think he will do the latter, at least in the short term.

We wouldn't be better with what we'd get for Zach
Fair value Zach trades are not being offered now, though. The reality of the situation is the deals being offered aren't remotely close to returning Zach's value to the Blazers. They aren't trades. They are dumps.
I refuse to support dumping Zach in a ".20 to .30 cents on the dollar" firesale that makes someone else's team a contender for long playoff runs.

Magloire
TheMarcus may develop into that, but he still seems more like a 4 than a 5 to me. Maybe even a 3; if we had the personnel for it, it could be fun to put in a supersize lineup (mags, zbo and lma) and have them take turns just dominating post play.
My big question is, what's gotten into Magloire? Is he working on his free agency highlights dvd?
by howlingfantods on Mar 24, 2007 11:48 AM PDT reply actions
Magloire's opponents emphasized his strengths
Nobody has ever questioned Magloire's ability to use his strength to dominate the area around the basket. All Magloire's problems revolve around when he's forced to defend a guy who forces Magloire to move out from underneath the basket. If Magloire has to cover a center that sets up in the high post, or has some skill with a jumper, he's in big trouble. He can't get out to cover them, and he can get back to provide help defense.
