Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

GAMEDAY OPEN THREAD: Blazers vs. Bobcats

Who will win the Battle of the "B" Teams?  OK...the Bulls. And the Bucks.  And Barcelona-Split.  But who will win THIS Battle of the "B" Teams?  Don't forget to register your jersey contest predictions (scroll down or click here).  You can use this thread for pre-game pontification, in-game chatter (yes, I'll be here), and post-game partying (or weeping and gnashing of teeth, as the case may be).

Don't forget the 4:00 game time both to join us here and as the deadline for jersey contest submissions.

a "must win"
This is one of those games that the Blazers need to win if they are going to gain any respect. And despite their 3 game skid, I think they are playing their best basketball of the season. A young, inexperienced team doesnt stand much chance against current NBA darling teams in denver, chicago, and phoenix... yet, they hung in their and had chances to win each game. Inexperience and lack of ref respect continues to be their downfall. One of these days, Roy is going to get foul calls when somebody so much as breaths on him going to the basket. As of now, they can hack away and take momentum right out from under us. And Ime isn't allowed to shut down any superstar scorers.

Get these wins against sub-500 teams and begin separating yourself from the lower end of the league. Respect will come (well, not so sure that is possible with a team from Portland), and it starts tonight.

Individually, a big game for Roy. It's his chance to truly separate himself from the rest of his draft class. In my mind, there is no doubt that he is the best and will be the best.

I have worried

Hey Dave (OT)
What do you guys do in your spare time up there in Idaho?

This from a guy in Las Vegas
Hey...at least we WEAR panties up here buddy.  (The girls anyway.  The guys have manly, rugged boxers.)

Besides I don't need to steal any.  When you're a world famous Blazer blogger/exotic dancer girls send you panties in the mail all the time.

Dude, I'm here for the panties.

Now can those go on "regular" or do they have to be on the delicate cycle? Can't upset the customers.

This game will be no contest
The Bobcats don't have the manpower or coaching prowess that the Blazers do.  The Blazers should win this game handily as long as they can continue working on keeping leads once they get them.

Back to the game (tipping off within a half-hour)
So it looks like Joel is getting the start.

That's too bad; I love the guy dearly, and I have full confidence that
he WILL be The Man we've all come to know and love
(especially from a couple of seasons ago--the Franz-hair-cover season),
but I do think the starting tandem of Big Smoothie and The Expensive JoJo
should be tried out at some point, and I think this game'd be the perfect opportunity.
Zach would match up well with Emeka (about the same level
of physicality, paint presence, and point of development),
and LaMardridge vs Gerald Wallace would be a very nice matchup;
it's not like G-Wall has some sort of NBA experience edge over him.

by QualityPie on Feb 9, 2007 3:59 PM PST reply actions

Hunh. Or maybe it's not that line-up.
ESPN's game preview shows their starting line-up with
Wallace & Emeka at the forwards, and Primo Brezec at center.
But the starting line-up the past few games shows
Wallace & Emeka as the two bigs, with The Stache at small forward.

If it's the Primo Brezec line-up tonight, Joel makes sense.
And Wallace IS their top scorer; thus, it'd be nice to see
Ime defending him instead of LaMarcus.

I still think a LaMarcus line-up is worth it if it's the Stache version.

And nothing would beat David Letterman introducing the players to each other.

Everybody on FirectTV who's not getting this, call in 1800-Directv now.

I'm on the phone with them and they're trying to tell me things about blackouts and not televised in my area and such but that's obviously not right.  Ken hearing from you in Las Vegas might help.

Still on hold... maybe more bothering will help.  Blazers get no RESPECT.

like SIX times before she got it.

NO...this game is not being shown on another channel

NO...I am not within the blackout radius

YES...this game should be picked up on League Pass just like the other 48 they've shown this year.

This is a BROADCAST ISSUE.  Please talk to technical support.

And if (s)he comes back and says (s)he did talk to them have him/her go back and talk to them again, at a higher level if necessary.

Good thing we got this place so we can all realize it's not just us.  I knew more about what was going on then the Directv people did!

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

Whoa
Dickau in.

Bobcats trap, Portland beat it. Zach drives hits a floater, hit on the arm, no call, Bobcats control. Carrol drives and is blocked by TO!

Zach in deep, but misses a close bucket. Felton crosses over on Dickau and draws a foul, shooting two.

Zach airball...twice on two plays now.  Now a foul on Dan D.

Portland shooting 37%. Yikes.

Felton hits 1/2.

38-37 Cats.

Ime for a three, BAD miss, Knight controls. Felton long three miss, four Blazers around the hoop, nobody jumps, Okafor gets the rebound and puts up a bucket and its fouled. Shameful.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 5:02 PM PST reply actions

Unbelievable
Okafor misses a FT, Charlotte grabs the rebound, and Wallace jumps up off balance and is fouled.

Shooting two.

Roy cuts down lane
and gets pass but Cats cut him off.  Ball goes to Ime for UGLY three.  Cats the other way, Felton shoots (good) misses (good) Cats rebound over three Blazers (VERY BAD) and fouled.  Now Blazers let the free throw rebound go back to Cats (VERY, VERY BAD) and give them another offensive board after the miss the shot (AGAIN BAD) and foul.  Two shots in.  42-37 them

Roy drives deep

Zach in deep and makes it.

Okafor for a long jump hook.

Zach scores on a nice
quick post move.  Here's the deal folks.  When Zach gets the ball with one foot in the paint he's going to score.  Meanwhile Emeka hits a jump hook followed by Lamarcus missing his.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 5:07 PM PST reply actions

Some people will look at that
and say 36% shooting is the problem.  But I look at that and say we didn't defend and rebound or the 36% wouldn't have mattered.  Way too many offensive rebounds and they got layups, dunks, and alley-oops in the halfcourt, which as we said the other night is just SAD.  It's one thing when Phoenix does it, but the Bobcats?!?

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 5:07 PM PST reply actions

Oh

Carrol misses a 3pt in the corner, Mags rebounds, but out of bounds to Cats. GOddamn.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:03 PM PST reply actions

Charlotte ball
Carroll open for three...NO!  Lucky!  Mags rebounds but steps on endline!  Nate takes long walk of frustration.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:03 PM PST reply actions

Finally
Okafor miss, Jack rebound.

Portland is 2/12 in the Q.

Ime drives and hits an easy two.

77-75

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:04 PM PST reply actions

Okafor misses
Mags rebound.  Blazers pass up three open shots but luckily Ime drives against shot clock and scores.  77-75  5:30 left.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:04 PM PST reply actions

Whoa
Carrol drives, is blocked by eighty people, but the ball rolls off of Zach's foot. Bobcats ball. Need another stop here.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:05 PM PST reply actions

Carroll drives and three Blazers collapse
(shouldn't have to do that).  Wild shot misses but ball off Zach and out.  Timeout.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:05 PM PST reply actions

Heh
I still don't get why Joel is not in. What more did Nate want from him in the third? Portland's froncourt D has been awful in the fourth.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:06 PM PST reply actions

We're getting stops
but we're not getting rebounds.  What's up with us tonight?

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:06 PM PST reply actions

I see
Charlotte called a TO after an offensive board.  Is that because the guy was in a bad spot, or did the coaches feel they could win this if they reminded their players where the ball goes when make that pass-like thing, but facing the basket?

by supremepuntiff on Feb 9, 2007 6:07 PM PST reply actions

They need timeouts
because they're young and kind of spastic.

by supremepuntiff on Feb 9, 2007 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

Ahhhhhh
OH C'MON! BS REFS! BS REFS! That was a cleaner strip by Jack on Wallace than all of the strips Charlotte has had against Zach.

Wallace hits first, and second. That was BS.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:08 PM PST reply actions

A-Mo back in
Fleas are now dripping all over the court.  Charlotte's Wallace drives.  Foul.  Free throws.  79-75

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:08 PM PST reply actions

GEEZ
THey almost did not call that reach in/slap foul on Felton, almost reinjured Roy.

Roy misses first, makes second.

79-76

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:09 PM PST reply actions

UGH
This team never tells the PG when he has the ball if someone is behind them to strip the ball. Luckily Felton was out of bounds.

Magloire deep, misses, gets it back, and is fouled.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:10 PM PST reply actions

Felton rainbow
off!  (Of course.)  Jarrett gets ball after rebound and STRIPPED!  STOP THAT!  Felton was out of bounds though.  Blazer ball.  Magloire deep...misses.  Gets own rebound.  Fouled.  Two shots.

What the hell was that? Three Blazers had the rebound and Wallace gets it from them and scores.

Zach hits on the other end.

81-79

JACK STEALS!

Drives, misses, but is fouled!

Jack should have passed that to a trailing Roy.

Makes first, and second! Tie game!

81-81

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:12 PM PST reply actions

C'mon
Jack drives, one ref calls a foul, the other a jumpball. That should be a foul, he was hit on the face first. Unbelievable.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:13 PM PST reply actions

Oh.
Wallace deep in paint against Zach.  Wallace goes right around him.  Score.  Jack drives at other end and tied up for jump ball.  83-81  3:20 left.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:13 PM PST reply actions

Bobcats win the tip, but only two run back, Bobcats 4-2, Roy fouls to prevent a Wallace dunk. Wallace misses first, makes second.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:15 PM PST reply actions

Wallace and Okafor's

by supremepuntiff on Feb 9, 2007 6:17 PM PST reply actions

None of us saw
the first quarter because of Directv issues, therefore nobody saw Joel play.

Blazer ball.  Zach loses ball but recovers.  Drives on Okafor and is fouled.

Wow
Portland not rebounding again, but Bobcats lose the ball out of bounds.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:19 PM PST reply actions

Felton dips past everybody
misses layup.  Carroll almost gets rebound but it's out of bounds.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:20 PM PST reply actions

Ugh
Roy posts up, and travels after Felton did not buy the pump fake.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:20 PM PST reply actions

Roy goes into post
good defense.  Travel.  Timeout.  Cats ball Blazers down one.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:20 PM PST reply actions

If the Blazers' initial move doesn't work
they have no options or outlets.  They're all one-on-one 90% of the time.  Nobody moves, nobody passes.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:22 PM PST reply actions

Let's go, need a stop
YES

Wallace on Zach, misses it, and Zach rebounds.

Zach against Okafor and is stripped again!

WHY DO THEY NOT CALL REACH IN FOULS?!!?

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:23 PM PST reply actions

OH HEL NO
JESUS CHRIST. OKAFOR DID NOT EVEN TOUCH THE BALL ON THAT. The refs are unbelievable in not calling anything on those strips for Portland.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:24 PM PST reply actions

Wallace burns Zach like a matchstick
but MISSES LAYUP!  Zach drives on Okafor and is STRIPPED!  Felton layup misses, but NO REBOUND and Wallace puts it back.  ZACH AGAIN NEVER GOT DOWN THE FLOOR.  Arguing with the refs.  I don't care if it was a foul...we lost a critical bucket that way.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:24 PM PST reply actions

The refs are screwing up
but ZACH is screwing up too...to NO GOOD.  Are they going to blow the whistle and call the play back?  We had no rebounders under there who weren't already committed to defense.  That is WRONG.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:25 PM PST reply actions

Down three

WOW
Zach drives and is fouled! Shooting two! Finally a call in our favor!

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:31 PM PST reply actions

Need a shot.  Roy is so clutch here.  Martell to Zach...drives...is FOULED with 2.1 left.  TWO FREE THROWS.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:31 PM PST reply actions

Now Zach should stop complaining
because that was barely a foul, especially for the deciding play.  Zach hits first.  Cats have no timeouts.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:31 PM PST reply actions

Well
That is if you believe in that this one foul call overshadows all the other 14 non-calls.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:35 PM PST reply actions

Zach drives
wild shot over Okafor.  No.  Jamaal tips...short.  We're getting outrebounded by a small team.  brevin Knight travels and it's our ball again

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:36 PM PST reply actions

Oof

Zach, fortunately gets fouled. Shooting two.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:37 PM PST reply actions

Zach catches

JACK IT UP!
Roy has 2 boards in OT so far

by supremepuntiff on Feb 9, 2007 6:39 PM PST reply actions

Zach, all is forgiven for that quick assist after you got doubled!

Well, almost all, he still needs to stop complaining, no matter how legitimate it is.

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:39 PM PST reply actions

Zach is not
holding the ball at all tonight.  That's good.

by Dave on Feb 9, 2007 6:40 PM PST reply actions

Ooooooooooooooohhhh!
Let's get a stop here.

Oh no!

Zach was there on the rotation D, slaps the ball away, but is called for a foul!

Jamaal blocked it from behind, but foul on Zach.

Voshkul hits first, misses second, and Jack rebounds!

by damir on Feb 9, 2007 6:42 PM PST reply actions

Zach drives on Voskuhl
lateral drive into the paint.  Wild shot but bailed out with a foul.  See...before they missed some calls but now they're calling everything.  Zach hits both 96-89

A-Mo

Ugly game, but Portland wins. I'll take that.

If Zach hadn't been complaining so damn much, Portland would have won in regulation.
