Jazz game
Well, although it'll be in the cheap seats (I still haven't seen where though), I'll be there.

I've REALLY been hoping that the streak was still alive when they got here.  This will be my first Blazer game in the Delta (yeah, E-S) center.  I'm stoked.

I wonder where I can get some poster board on New Years Eve...

by bakerzdosen on Dec 31, 2007 1:25 AM PST reply actions

I was there last time
AS I can't cheer, it's up to you to get the win.

Stand when the jazz fans sit, and sit when they stand.

Cheer loudly and long for the blazers while telling jazz fans around you there's no way this team can beat the Jazz AGAIN at the delta center.  They've just bee3n lucky after all.

Don't let our young team lose!  Let them know that you're there giving them the love on behalf of all the blazernation.

This is Portland. Portland loves its Blazers. Welcome to OUR house.

Ha! Easy Win!
LMA will neutralize Boozer, JJ3 will be stroking it from outside, and Roy will get a near triple-double.

This team will lose before too long, but not tonight.

Utah will be ready and firing, but they still can't crack our zone.

by jscot on Dec 31, 2007 1:39 AM PST reply actions

Easy win?!?! Are you NUTZOID?!
I know you are just following tradition, but I've also noticed that someone has to not realize you are just following tradition in declaring an easy win and declare you KAH-RAZEE for saying it is an easy win.  I will perform this role to my fullest capacity!

Utah, easy?  You are INSANE.  Boozer is a beast, Deron is a swan, and Memo just wrote a memo saying he needs you for a meeting-- a meeting where we LOSE.  Easy?  Yeah, maybe in INSANO-WORLDOPOLISVILLE.

I hope I did okay in disputing your claim of easy victory, thus sealing what is already destined for our Blazer team.

Plus
the team will want to win one for Nate.  (And for Coach Dean.)

about nate
I was going to mention this -- it's actually the biggest concern for me, playing without Nate.  I hope they (and he) get through this alright.

by kickbrass on Dec 31, 2007 9:44 AM PST up reply actions

No problem
Nate is obviously a failure as a coach.  He's got a team with enough talent to win 13 straight, but he can only manage to coach them to a point differential of +0.3, and it took a blowout of a team which had won 3 straight to get there.

Disgraceful!

Who says
the Blazers have the talent to win 13 in a row? Maybe it's good coaching....

My Prediction
Blazers by 8

107 - 99

I can see Korver dropping 15 on the Blazers in his Utah debut, hits 3 from long range, but LMA keeps Boozer in check (Boozer goes 5-15, 17 pts and 8 boards). Our starters keep pace with their starters and our White unit is the difference.

If the Blazers win, then it goes to show everyone that they can win without him.  If the Blazers lose, then it is Nate's fault for not preparing the team.

Question...
Would you rather be the ASSISTANT coach on the Blazers, or the HEAD coach of the Knicks?

I'll see your water boy...and raise you...
  • I think I'd rather have my testicles slammed in a drawer repeatedly than coach the Knicks
  • I think I'd rather be forced to listen to Kenny G exclusively for a year than coach the Knicks
  • I think I'd rather volunteer to change Dave's kid's diapers for a year than coach the Knicks
  • I think I'd rather be forced to root for the L*kers than coach the Knicks

That's how bad being a coach for the Knicks would be with their current organization & team dynamics.  Anyone care to raise the bet?

500K versus 3 million
Not that any of our (for now) "no name" Blazer assistants would get a job as high profile as the Knicks job, but I'd think most any of the assistant coaches would jump at the chance to get one of the only 30 NBA head coaching jobs in the world-- plus make a LOT more money as well.

Remember what happened after Nate made the Sonics overachieve; practically half of his assistants got head coaching jobs (for better or worse).  In a few years I imagine guys like Monty Williams will take over some young team as we're plucked of a few of our feathers, but that's a great sign of respect and inevitable if you're winning (like how even the former waterboy of the Spurs can get a GM job anywhere these days).

Would ya like to win a championship in the NBADL, or get called up for a major role on a "real" team?  Of course, not all assistant coaches want to be head coaches, but I'm sure some do... and I wouldn't blame them for walking into what seems like the worst situation in the world for the chance at buckoo bucks and the opportunity to run your own team.

I'm not saying you aren't agreeing with this, of course.  I'm just answering your interesting question.

Nate left a decent Sonics team to run the worst team in the league, Pritchard left the best franchise to get a promotion for the worst, etc and so forth.  PJ Carlesimo left a great assistant job with the Spurs to coach a team where no one has any idea which city they'll be in within 2 years.  The lure of a promotion and a chance to be the boss man is great!

I certainly hope we don't lose our main assistant dudes, but we long as we got Roy, Oden, LMA, Nate, and KP (along with Allen signing the checks) then I won't worry too much.  Not to undervalue what guys like Dean and Monty do, of course.

NY is tough as hell to succeed in in the sports world, but if ya DO succeed, you get to drink free in NY bars for the rest of your life.  And that's worth its weight in goldschlagger!

I think the UH starters can play with the Georgia starters but once guys start getting tired and back-ups come in, that is where I get worried.  I actually do not have a prediction.  I have watched UH put up a ton of points, but never against this level of competition.  If you're interested, what is your self-talk on the game?

I haven't seen any Hawaii games
As much as I hope Hawaii hangs in there and even wins like Boise State last year, I doubt it will happen for the following reasons:

  • This is the big one.  There were all those close wins against poor teams.  While it true that Hawaii won't have the same road fatigue they've had during some of those games, their opponent won't have the road fatigue that was there for most of their big wins.

  • There biggest wins (Fresno St, Boise St, Washington) were at home and they were all fairly close... and weren't really that big.

  • Georgia is one of the hottest teams right now.  They are also one of the most athletic and (as you said) much deeper.

I expect that Hawaii will ride a surge of adrenaline through the first half and keep it close, but in the second half Georgia will pull away and leave little doubt who the best team is.

by Gargen on Dec 31, 2007 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah
I can see that.  What a lot of people do not realize is that Hawaii has a lot of guys that would be starters on teams in BCS conferences, but either do to academic problems or criminal records; Hawaii was the only school to take them.

The recruiting philosophy is locals, Polynesians, military kids, and then kids in trouble with the law on the mainland.  The QB and the number one receiver are in that last category.

Both lines are pretty stout for Hawaii too.  They have lost of big a$$ Polynesians.  Hawaii is quick so the speed of the game should not be a problem, like both of us stated, it will come down to depth.

Hawaii actually was in control the entire Boise State game but Washington had me on the edge of my seat until the end.  A lot of games this year, Hawaii looked so sloppy that they made the other teams look good.  I think no matter what, it will be a really exciting game.

Thanks again to Dave's baby Derek, and only positive things will happen from here on out, even with the occasional loss. At least we all feel like we are going to be in the game.

I'm Remembering Dave...
When he was complaining about all the jumpers the Blazers were taking.

Now, suddenly, we're making them and it doesn't seem like such a bad strategy. Never knew this team was composed of great shooters.

Remember Dave's posts? He'd chart out the plays and it was like: jumper, jumper, jumper, foul, turnover, jumper, jumper, turnover... and he'd beg for drives.

But that chart seems like it's this game except they're going in.

Not Too Shabby
I was really worried about us coming out flat in the first quarter and letting the game get away.  They haven't been stellar early the last few games and this is the second of a back to back so . . .

Luckily, not so much.  Aldridge has 10, Roy has 7, so we've got our keys guys in it early.  Frye looks good, as has been the trend of late.

Utah definitely has the momentum, though, as Mortimer said.  The opening of the second quarter is going to be real important.

Need to see some passing, cutting, and layups now.

The Blazers won't win
Until they start being physical with the Jazz and start rebounding. The Jazz can't hit a damn thing outside today.

by Dheepan on Dec 31, 2007 6:09 PM PST reply actions

Hard fought game tonight
The Blazers will have to have a full team effort to beat the very physical Jazz team.   They need to work to ball inside and then they can either go to the basket or pass to Martell or Jones for a open 3.

by OrygunRod on Dec 31, 2007 6:09 PM PST reply actions

Well, It Could Be Worse
We could pretty easily be down more.  Surprisingly, we're up one on rebounds, though the Jazz have 5 offensive to our 2.  We only have five turnovers, but they have 11 points off those five.  Oh, and they have three.  Both teams are shooting over 50%.

I really hope a more physical and aggressive team comes out in the second half.  I would say that if we keep even during the third, we have an excellent chance to win it in the fourth.  And that may be true.  But I don't know if this team will be as strong in the fourth in this game than they have in the last few.

Still, I'm very cautiously optimistic.  We could definitely win this game.  Then again, we could completely lose it in the third.  It's going to be interesting.

2nd half
Our starters are better in +/- than their starters. We should win this game with our starters playing more.

Long shots mean long rebounds. Most of their offensive rebounds came on the long shots. We will rebound better in the 2nd half.

The big question for us. Can we continue to make our outside shots at such a high %?

by TallTimber on Dec 31, 2007 6:16 PM PST reply actions

High %?
The Blazers look good on those long 2s, but only 2/9 from three-point land. That needs to improve in the second half.

by jcaris on Dec 31, 2007 6:34 PM PST reply actions

Did this really happen?
The ref admitted that he just gave Utah two points! And then Okur complained about not getting calls and draws a technical? I've never seen a ref give a team points, admit it and then on the next play have a player from that team complain.

I can't believe nobody on the Blazers freaked out when they gave the Jazz two points and admitted to it. I like how this team never complains to the refs, but that is as bad as you'll ever see in a game. That would be like a judge ruling a mistrial but still throwing the guy in jail. Don't you think even the most inept lawyer would do something.

by terryisntbald on Dec 31, 2007 6:34 PM PST reply actions

Unfortunately
This ain't a court (well, okay, it is, but you know) and they can complain all they want but that doesn't mean the ref has to listen.

Well
If you are officiating this game you have to blow your whistle whenever the Jazz "play defense". This is how they play.

by Dheepan on Dec 31, 2007 7:22 PM PST reply actions

Hard to blame the refs
when we have 37 FTs and they have 21.

I'm just angry
At how dirty the Jazz play.

by Dheepan on Dec 31, 2007 7:23 PM PST reply actions

It doesn't matter if they play dirty
losing because we got outcoached and outhustled is what really ticks me off.

by theanomaly777 on Dec 31, 2007 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

it feels like the blazers are intimidated by
physical play and swagger of wack jazz.  Jazz lost the last 2 by blowouts.

by theanomaly777 on Dec 31, 2007 7:25 PM PST reply actions

What is so dirty about the Jazz?
They play tough, but I never thought they played that dirty.

Let me know what the radio is not conveying to me.

Uhm
Grabbing, tripping, smacking, pulling, flopping, kicking, scratching. Think Bruce Bowen. Okay, got it? Now imagine the entire team playing that way and the refs letting them do it. They average the most PF in the league.

I picked this game for the...
streak breaker like most of us did, but it is still heartbreaking.

Losing sucks
But the bounce back games against Minny and Chicago are winnable, and we can start a new streak.

We, me, and the players three can't be too down.  Utah is so tough to win in.

by Mortimer on Dec 31, 2007 7:27 PM PST reply actions

lame game
13 in a row was sweet.. I will be even more impressed with the team if they bounce back and beat the wolves.

Time to start winning on the road though, 3-10 on the road is a joke.

they outcoached, outhustled, and
played with more heart.  I hate losing like that.  This game is more about getting repect from all the doubters out there and they couldn't come through.  Now lets see how much heart they have after a loss.

Reason we're getting killed in the paint
Is because we keep getting fouled!!!

Most of those free throws should be credited as paint points.

Like I said
This is a good time for the streak to end, since it HAS to end, because we got Minny and then the Bulls on TNT.

Time to show it's not just a streak, and we is a good TEAM.

This is just one game
The season goes on.   The Blazers have many good chances to win on the road in the upcoming road trip.

As Rice says Nate will be ready to push these guys when they are favored on the road.

Jazz wanted it more
I guess the Blazers can use being tired as an excuse, but tonight was a big test and the Blazers did not pass.

Will be interesting to see how they respond.

by leeroyjenkins on Dec 31, 2007 7:35 PM PST reply actions

Dang, This Is Hard
I've gotten used to the winning and it's tough to see a loss, especially right at the end of the year.  But hey, tomorrow is a new day and a new year.  We play Minnesota next and should be able to win that game.  Actually, seeing how we play there is going to give us a real idea of what this team is made of.

The streak had to end some time.  I wish it had been far in the future, but the odds were probably against us tonight, no matter how great we've played in December.  Utah's still a solid team, we were playing on a tough court, we didn't have Nate, and we were on the second of a back to back, with traveling in between the games.

I think my biggest disappointment tonight is that we didn't play as tough as we needed to.  We should have been fouling hard, we should have thrown some elbows, we should have knocked around the Jazz more the way they knocked around us.  I don't know if that will change at all for us, and that's what makes me question whether or not we can get the the playoffs.  I don't know--we'll see if we learn the lesson or not.  But I think back to that promise Frye made to Nate, and I'm thinking that promise has not totally been fulfilled.  Partially, yes, but not totally.

Where we go from here is going to say a lot.  How we play our next 12 games, with 10 of them on the road, is going to say a lot.  The streak had to end, and now it has.  It's time to find out if we're going to be in the playoffs or not.  I'm sad tonight, but I'm excited to see how we respond.  This loss gives us a new opportunity to see where this team is.  We get to see now if they truly are a different team than at the beginning of the year or if they revert, or if it's something in between.

The future's bright.  I can't wait to see what it brings.

Derron Williams
did not have a great game tonight and Blake and Jack were responsible. Conversely neither one had a good offensive game either but Jack was high for the Blazers with 5 rebounds. There are many factors that enter into a win or a loss. Too many of those factors are not statistics kept by the NBA.

by lee3022 on Dec 31, 2007 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

backing FTW
Jack has been less than impressive on most nights.  I am not sure what people see in him.  Bad D, cant run a break, cant run a team, cant hit a jumper, cant find the open man, it goes on and on.  It is easier to say what Jack does well, and that is get to the line, thats it.  If the whistles dont blow in his favor he is pretty much useless.  Rudy will replace Jack next year and Jack will be off "getting to the line" for some other team...

Jazz is not even that good.  They need to play with more heart.  Bottom line, you are a winner or you are loser in this game.   It doesn't matter if you make it to playoffs, if you don't win the championship.  You are still a LOSER!  Win(championships) or go home.  Nobody repects losers.  Everybody respects the patriots and spurs because they win.  There is no substitute to victory if its WWII or just a basketball game.

by theanomaly777 on Dec 31, 2007 7:38 PM PST reply actions

From now on
the Blazers will be competitive on the road and very good at home.   The streak  shows that this young team has great ability and a very great future.

Utah has always been a very tough place to play.   It looks like Sloan has them back on track.   They have shaken their losing ways by casting off Giricek and getting Korver.   I expect them to be their typical team the rest of the season.

The Blazers have learned again the hard lesson that they have to be ready and play hard every game.   They will get the message  --  Nate will see to that.

by OrygunRod on Dec 31, 2007 7:42 PM PST reply actions

terrible officiating
they didnt call a charge all game long(I saw a few called as blocks when they were obviously charges, even in a pick-up game), and they refused to call traveling against the jazz.  I counted about 5 different times that boozer changed pivot foots and there was no whistle, unacceptable.  Not to mention there were several other jazz players doing the more than two step and getting away with it.  Oh well, when we get good officiating, we compete, when they screw us, we lose.  Simple as that.

Free-throw margin.
They called it poorly, but they called it poorly both ways. We shot 16 more free throws than they did and couldn't capitalize.

by rockingharder on Dec 31, 2007 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

ya but they got 20 more fg attempts.
Many of those attempts should have been taken away by charges and travels.  yes we shot more freethrows but the jazz never got called for a loose ball foul...

What a great month
Our team is tough.  Folks notice and respect the Blazers now.  They're one of the best teams in the league.  We've had a wonderful December cheering them on.  No regrets.

Knowing the streak had to end sometime, I wanted it to end at the Rose Garden in a nail-biter against a tough team, and at the buzzer, all the fans would give the Blazers a standing ovation.

The refs didn't beat us, myemic23.  Give the Jazz and Kyle Korver credit.

Damir and Sergioftw, behave yourselves.  Our team loses one game and we're already bickering?

Happy New Year, everyone.

The Blazers aren't tough
That's their biggest weakness.  The steak is great but one major problem that remains from before the streak is the Blazer's lack on an enforcer.  Perhaps Nate being there would have helped this Blazer team respond to being shoved around all game.

They learned how to win
Now lets get them used to losing.  If they lose out the rest of the season, they'll have the best draft pick in the whole neighborhood.

Our first playoff game
For this team tonight was a playoff intensity game. Utah simply had to win. We were not as ready for the intensity but this is how we get there. Many nights the Spurs get a team's best shot. If we aspire to lead the division we must also learn to take team's best shots. Some we will lose but I am hoping the education is taken and we will get better at dealing with the intensity. Just as Brandon and LaMarcus have had to learn to deal with double teaming the whole team has to learn to deal with the intensity and grow.
