Phi/Utah Trade!!!!

http://www.sportsline.com/nba/story/10548899

Apparently the Sixers acquired Kyle Korver for disgruntled Gordan Giricek  which you might all kno has been having problems with coach jerry sloan... no suprise he traded... but for Kyle Korver!!!

Right now it looks like Utah adds another weapon...maybe they've started to hit the panic button a little?????
Maybe that 1st round pick might be the only incentive and probably to rid the Sixers of that Korver Contract

A shake up to break out of their slump
This isn't the best news for Portland.

Hey Dave
What are you gonna do about the people who chose Korver as the leading 3 pt shooter in the Blazers-Sixers game?

I seriously considered picking Korver to have the highest 3 pt %, but then I went with the odds and chose Jones (since Jones currently has the highest in the league).

I'm curious to see how Dave deals with this unexpected turn of events and the effect it has on the BE jersey contest.

Nature bats last.

thank goodness
I just went and looked, and no one has chosen Korver yet to be the leading 3 pt shooter. Looks like the Korver trade will not disrupt the jersey contest.

Very interesting
Our zone will give Philly bigger problems now, I think.

Short term, this will probably make it harder for us to make the playoffs this year, although I expected Utah to shake out of it and probably surpass us anyway.  Long term, the loss of the pick may hurt them (although it's not likely to be a real high pick).  So we may actually be slightly better off.

It does look like Utah wants to compete now.

Utah
has wanted to trade Giricek forever and a day.  I'm surprised they finally pulled it off...and for a good shooter too.  I don't like what this does for them...meaning as a Blazer fan I think it dims our chances a little.

This makes me happy
Words cannot express how happy it makes me that a division rival is taking on Kyle Korver's horrible contract.

by terryisntbald on Dec 29, 2007 12:02 PM PST reply actions

I wouldn't call
korver's contract "horrible".  Three years left at around 5 mill/per for a productive sixth man seems like a pretty decent bargain.

Fills a gaping need for Utah.  Also I'd much rather see Roy abusing GG than see our guys chasing Korver off screens.

I don't think this alters the balance of power, obviously, but this has made Utah somewhat better.

Wow this is a good trade for Utah
They obviously didn't mind taking on Korver's extra years. There will be some who will praise Ed Stefanski for this trade but I wonder if Billy King would have made it. Seems like kind of a no brainer to me.
Who needs Greg Oden? We got Pete Carril....

Korver
I think Sloan thinks Korver is the new Jeff Hornacek

Korver
Is actually a gargoyle.  I get chills when I look at him.

Yeah...
I get chills too, but for a different reason... I think he looks exactly like Ashton Kutcher.

by rockingharder on Dec 29, 2007 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

This seems like a sideways trade
it is like the same player with a 2" height difference and a moppier haircut. I could definitely see a Steinbrenner Mattingly argument breaking out between Sloan and Korver; ending with Korver shaking his hands wildly, while choking back tears, frustratedly saying "Well I'm never going to be Matt Harpring!"

I am guessing if your name is not Carlos Boozer or Deron Williams you are just going to be getting perimeter shots at the end of the shot clock to bail out a botched pick and roll. Not the most positive situation to be in.

Looking into the future
For me, that is as far as tomorrow's game against Philly.

This has got to have some effect on the 6er's team chemistry and one more click toward Our Team on the advantages scale.

Surprise
Wasn't Korver one of the guys they named just last year as cornerstones of their development?  He is a dangerous shooter and seems to be a hustle guy.  I haven't seen him enough to rate his defense night in and night out.  I wanted the Blazers to go after him for shooting before the arrival of JJ33.

Korver is the better shooter and is 4 years younger.  He could make Utah much better.  I don't know why Philly makes this trade unless Korver was unhappy or something.

by tssbro on Dec 29, 2007 1:46 PM PST reply actions

Seems like this is a lopsided trade in
Utah's favor.  Especially considering what Giricek was doing for their chemistry.  Ah I just saw that Philly got a pick and Giricek's contract was expiring, so that evens it out.

by ranma on Dec 29, 2007 1:49 PM PST reply actions

Korver
He has been pretty cold this year. Stefanski aint no chump. Something was definitely wrong in philly that we did not know about.

by jonestr on Dec 29, 2007 1:55 PM PST reply actions

ya
korver's 3 pt shooting is ok but his fg% is under 40%, ouch...  still a completely lopsided trade in Utah's favor...

Draft pick
No one seems to be mentioning that Stefanski got a 1st rounder in this years draft from this trade. Giricek is off the books at the end of this year. I would say this is a pretty awesome trade for the Sixers.

by jonestr on Dec 29, 2007 2:00 PM PST reply actions

Hey
I was just thinking the same thing.  The diary didn't make that clear.

Fantastic trade for the 6ers and Jazz, and especially for the 6ers, as they are currently getting a decent player with an expiring contract and a lottery pick!

Probably won't last, but it will be a mid first-rounder at worst and this is a draft touted for depth.

They may get a sleeper, and go on to do serious damage in the East for a long time.

This is not a lopsided trade whatsoever, if I understand the facts correctly.

I saw Korver play a lot in college
He was very, very impressive shooting stroke. To me, he's more dangerous mid-range than he is from 3-point range. I used to think Philly was martinalizing him to a corner to shoot threes (sound familiar, Webster fans?) and he was better suited to flat-out shoot. If Sloan uses him well--and I think he will--I expect to see a huge resurgence from him and a big lift for the Jazz.

For someone above, I see Korver/Webster as the identical player (though at different places). Not Korver/Giricek.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
