Rudy Tootie..... I just don't get it

By my estimation over 70% over the blazersedge community is expecting Rudy Fernandez to be a significant contributor next year.

Of course I hope he will be a great player, but I don't expect it.  Here are my concerns:

He is very thin with a narrow frame.  He is hyped as a great finisher based on his youtube highlight reel.  I don't think he will get the easy open court dunk opportunities.  He won't be able to strongly finish in the NBA.  When he dunks he usually gathers and then uses both hands.  He needs a fastbreak or alley oop to finish and we are not headed to that style of play.

His shooting.  I really have no idea what his stats are.  My concern is that his shot is different each time and he will struggle to consistently hit set shots.  I am guessing he is a streak shooter.

Management, Media and fans are all buying in.  What am I missing about Rudy.  I hope you can convince me, because I would like to share in the hugely optimistic future getting even better.

I've been wondering as well
I think he could be a great bench player, but I think his rookie campaign will be very much like Sergio's. Sporadic in-game stints with a short leash. I don't know how good his english is, but you do have to wonder about a language barrier existing (although this probably isn't as big of a problem for a SG as a PG who needs to communicate more).

But I think he will be good if we bring him over because KP has shown a knack for going out and getting players who improve. Also Sergio will also help ease some of the culture shock, and the two could combine to lead a very exciting 2nd unit (NBA: where white unit alley-oops happen).

24th
The funny thing is, the bar has just been raised.  Roy and Rudy starting at guard sounds good until you realize we may be a contending team within 3 years.  What are the odds of a rookie, drafted 24th overall and offensively oriented, stepping in as a championship level starter?  Let's not put too much pressure on poor Rudy.  Next year, he's going to have to play better defense than Martell, handle the ball better than Jack or shoot better than Travis to get any playing time.  His primary skill is scoring on a team that already shoots a high percentage and doesn't have a problem getting quality shots.

If the guy can play passable defense, hit a few shots, speak English, and be generally fiesty, I'll consider his rookie year a success.

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy... my favorite topic
Rudy has played 11 games so far this year in what KP considers the toughest league outside the nba. Rudy is arguably the best player on the best team in the league(keeping in mind Ricky Rubio is there).  His stats are:

26 mpg, 17 ppg(leads team), 3rpg, 4apg(leads team), 50% 2pt, 40% 3pt, 96% ft.   value = 20.6(leads team), the next closest player is Rubio at 17.9

I think the biggest miss-conception about Rudy is that he is going to be dunking and driving all day.  That really isnt his game, the atheleticism is obviously there, but Rudy's real weapon is his deep ball.  He averages over 6 3pt fg attempts every game and still shoots 40%. he uses that threat to get to the hoop and finish. If he cant finish he usually  draws a foul, he is averaging 4 freethrow attempts per game, and that is with Ricky Rubio running the point and taking the lions share of the drives to the basket. Since lots of people like Rubio, Rudy averages a full assist more than the drive happy point guard.

Unfortunately, his stats are in spanish and I cant figure out if they even list steals and turnovers.  But from what I have seen Rudy is a willing and committed defender, he is very good in the passing lanes and off the ball on defense but might get taken advantage of in 1 on 1 situations, but what blazer guard not named Roy isnt get torched 1 on 1.  The zone is what has been working and I think his defense would work nicely in that.

All that said, he is not going to start next year unless there is catastrophic injuries.  I essentially see him taking Jacks role as a scorer off the bench, likely paired with Sergio or Roy in the backcourt.  I think Rudy is the scoring 2 that can start alongside Roy, just not next year.  Rudy is going to have to show he can guard point guards for that to happen, and I think he will eventually.

Here is the statsheet if anyone can figure it out any further:  http://www.acb.com/stsacum.php?cod_competicion=LACB&cod_edicion=52&cod_equipo=JOV&totale s=0

The last 3 or 4 categories on the right are the ones that dont make sense to me.  I translated "Balones,  Tapones, and Faltas" and got back  "Balls, Caps, and offenses"  I was thinking that offenses might be fouls committed and fouls recieved, but I am not sure.

Rudy vs Ricky
Rudy and Ricky are pretty close right now, but hey, Rudy is 5 years and a half older than Ricky.

Ricky sounds like an amazing young player
and they do seem pretty close. I have only seen highlights of Rubio so I am not sure who to think is better but I do think they are both pretty good.  Yes Rubio is way younger than Rudy but I wouldnt exactly call him an old man, he turns 23 in April.

Faltas
Faltas are fouls, tapones are steals, which must mean balones are turnovers.

I think your guess is good about fouls committed and fouls received.  I'm guessing that the breakdown of steals is the same - steals made and steals from.  (Great breakdown by the way - anything like this for the NBA??)

The "MAT" may be jump ball.

How about we get Ben to talk to Sergio and get these translated correctly!

by jorga on Dec 28, 2007 7:54 AM PST up reply actions

Translation Spanish-English
Asi efe = Assists
Balones Rec = Steals
Balones Per = Turnovers
Tapones Fav = Blocks
Tapones Con = Blocks Against
Mat = Dunks
Val = Similar to efficiency rating

He's a fun young prospect
Dave has been right in commenting that too many Blazer fans (prolly all fans really) put unreasonable expectations on rookies or unseen players, and that's what I see happening with Rudy.

BUT, Rudy is a terrific prospect, and SHOULD be a good NBA player.  I think it's safe to say he'll be, at the very least, an exciting player who fans love... but until he gets stronger and adapts to the quicker NBA game, he can't be relied on to be our lil' Manu off the bench.

Pritchard loves him, so I love him.  He's really young, and him being picked in the late 1st round shouldn't be held against him.  That is mostly because GMs knew he wouldn't be able to come over for a bit and they don't like "wasting" a pick like that, AND it was a crazy deep draft last year anyways.  Universally Rudy is considered one of Europe's best, most awesomest prospects, so I'd rather be happy we were able to get him for such a low price rather than worry that he must not be good just because others passed on him.

Rudy is something to be excited about, but like any rookie (aside from Oden) he'll take time to be useful.  He won't make us a playoff team.  It's unhealthy to expect too much from the kid, but that's what fans do.

But, Tweener, I understand your worries... if KP and Friends think highly of him, then I think it's okay for us to do so.  Rudy is a lot better than that lame Italian Golden State drafted ahead of him (because he could come over right away), and has a good all round game reportedly.  He doesn't seem to be a streaky Juan Dixon type, and he appears to be pretty athletic for a Euro shooting guard-- and that's what will possibly make him a good NBAer.

I've watched some of his games on TVwhen I lived in Europe for a lil' bit, and he looked dang good.  Manu's slashing and shooting is the best comparison.  He just needs to get muscles and adjust to McDonalds and apple pie and drop that paella and taco junk they eat over in Spain.

So, Tweener, I say keep your expectations low and then hopefully you'll be happily surprised with how he plays.  Me personally ain't gonna expect much next year, but I think he'll at least be a good off the bench scorer.

Rudy AKA the new Sergio
We do love our Euro flavor here at Blazers Edge. It's the whole back up QB theory, We haven't seen him, hype him up, then write it down in ink that he's gonna be good right away. That's a dangerous way to look at things, because inevitably, you'll be disappointed in him. I've only seen highlights of him against Euros', and who doesn't look good in there own highlight package? I'd look like a reck league all-star if you just saw the good plays I made. Anyway, I am expecting nothing from him, I haven't even seen him play against NBA competition yet! If he ends up being a plus player, I will be pleasantly surprised.

Rudy v Ginobili
Even after being one of the best, if not the best in the Europe in the years post the 1999 draft up until he came to the NBA in 2002, Ginobili still took about three years to develop into the player that he is today. Ginobili was 24 when he came into the NBA. Rudy will be 23 when he comes over next season. I expect that he will be a sub fore most of the year, maybe getting 15-20 by year end. I can see Rudy becoming what Manu is to the Spurs, a reliable 6th man that can put in 15 to 20 points a night. Can two players from the same team win 6th man of the year: Outlaw and Fernandez anyone?

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
