Some Semi Seasonal Stats

Since it will be like a child waiting for Christmas to wait all the way to Tuesday for the next game, I put together some leading stats amongst the Blazers to mull over. I am so pleased that they reflect the depth of the team.  Even though I limit it to the top three (unless a tie for third), everyone is listed except I omitted Taurean Green's and Josh McRobert's stats as  early statistic anomolies.  Mr Green's stats look great, though, so I hope he gets more play.

I like to look at the numbers like they tell a story.  I'm thankful the team plays for the sport and the joy of it.  Where would Jarrett Jack's first quarter ending half court long bomb be if he was inhibited by not wanting to risk his stats?  It wouldn't have been in the bucket.  And the crowd would not have been on their feet. And the stats don't tell a complete story.  There are no stats for setting a good pick, setting a great pick, big showboat moves that make the crowd go crazy, defining plays during the final seconds, plays that stop opponents run, plays that should have been in the stats if only the referree had done his job well.  Ah such is the limitations of stats.

Also note, these are from my own spread sheet record keeping.  I use the box score in the fish wrapper, so there are a few places that it differs from what is in the Blazer web, but if it is my entry error, I can't find the problem.  This includes Jarrett Jack's assists being off by 4 and LaMarcus Aldridge's rebounds being 58 & 111 instead of 61 & 108. Minutes had even more discrepancies with small margins for Martell, LaMarcus, Jarrett, James, Sergio and Raef.  That said.

First and only so far to reach 1000 minutes: Brandon Roy 1014

Mahalo as well
You did a lot of work and thanks for sharing.  There must be some sort of "left brain/right brain" types of fandom too.  I love that you have your own spreadsheet of stats.  To me, that would be turning my favorite sport into homework.  It's awesome though, thanks again.
Happy Holidays and Mele Kalikimaka!

Holy christmas!
I remember you keeping these stats a couple months or so back.  Amazing LadyGoneGrey.  I love your persistence, stick-to-it-tivness, determination, perserverance and plain old hard work not to mention your obvious passion for the game.  Are you for hire by any chance? I think I need someone like you.

Wow
I love stats too, but wouldn't have the patience to enter every game into a spreadsheet.  Good work!

After I looked at these I wondered about turnovers, so did a little number crunching myself.

Here's what I found - first number is total turnovers, the second is one turnover every x minutes.

Listed in descending order of total turnovers.

Jack          66  10.6
Roy           54  18.7
Aldridge    46  16.4
Blake        42  18.6
Przybilla    36  16
Outlaw       35  20.5
Webster     33  25
Rodriguez   25  9.9
Frye           23  17.8
Jones         14  23.3
LaFrentz       4  31.25

Of course it would be nicer to see turnovers to touches/possessions, but I don't have access to "touch" statistics :-)

Ah, Another Stat Fiend
Way cool. I keep the turnovers, personal fouls, and technical fouls also.  Most of the data is tallied as per game and per minute. The team field goal and free throw percentages (likewise for the opposing team), if it was a home or away game, if we we won or lost, and the scores are also catalogued as reference (not tallied).  I didn't post more data because I was afraid no one would be interested in it.

Excel makes it so easy compared to how I did it back in the day. In Excel, I keep a worksheet for each player where I enter the raw data as well as one for the team overall.  Then, I have a worksheet of the tallies which draws from the raw data on the players worksheets.  It takes five to ten minutes to enter the data from a game.

I get so excited to see how certain performances improve a certain player's stats.  It is fun to watch a player improve his free throws or his choice of shots or his rebounding by watching his stats change.  Sometimes these changes are gradual enough, you might not have noticed them if you weren't keeping the stats.  It is also fun to be watching a game and recognize when a player is excelling above his usual in a certain way.  For instance, during the 11-23-07 game when Sergio sunk three 3 pointers, or Friday night's game when Channing Frye pulled down 10 rebounds.

I'm not done formatting the player-per-matchup worksheet.  It will display how certain players have performed against certain teams.  I've put it off since I use it more at playoff time or for those final matchups with the Western Conference teams.  It is reassuring to note which players performed well against which teams. After the holidays, I'll have to get to getting on that one.

I've been told my spreadsheet reeks of too much time on my hands in my newly empty nest.  But, I find that it boosts my enjoyment of the games.  Also, my computer is too old and the dial up too slow to rely on getting data at will from a web site.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
