New praise for Roy from SI.com
The Ryder Cup (officially the Ryder Cup Matches) is a golf com between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is also the name of the trophy, after the person who donated it, Samuel Ryder.
The competition began following an exhibition match in 1926 between a team comprising American professionals against a similar one drawn from the British PGA on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. The first competition took place in 1927. (from Wikipedia)
The Ryder Cup was expanded in 1979 to include players from all of Europe, not just from the UK and Ireland. The fifteen matches since then have been more competitive, with each side winning seven times, plus one tie. Arguably the most memorable of those matches took place in 1999, when the Americans came back from a 10-6 deficit on the final day to win 14.5-13.5. Controversy ensued on the 17th green of the second-to-last match of the day between Justin Leonard and Jose Maria Olazabal when, after Leonard holed a 45-foot putt to all but ensure an American victory, several players ran across the green to celebrate, even before Olazabal had a chance to attempt his putt. The Americans did not run through Olazabal's line, but he missed the putt to halve the hole.
This behavior was deemed by European players and pundits as "ugly" and "barbaric," prompting Americans to counter with "Scoreboard." After losing the next three competitions following the memorable 1999 event, the Americans took the cup back in 2008. The sore losers Europeans will attempt to take back the cup beginning Friday at Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales.
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts. Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts. We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.
So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. Everyone else is doing the same, so you will find the JD an eclectic place where you might read something interesting, pointless, profound, or just funny within a few moments. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized. Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated Remember everything you write is visible publicly Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Z' on your keypad to mark a comment as read and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.
