Would you trade the Blazers for the Celtics?

Today, as I rode into work on the MAX, I did, as I always do, thought intently about my most favorite topic, the Blazers.

I started wondering whether winning sooner rather than later, would be as sweet as the long drawn out process of development.  But this is where my mind and heart started to race.

What if we had built a team like the Boston Celtics?  This thought has crossed my mind before, but never in the context of "Would I rather", but more in the context of "Remember the late 90's and all of the imports".  Then it dawned on me that those teams were missing something that this team clearly has: Deep Fan Appreciation.

I can remember feeling like those late 90's teams were just continuing a mediocre streak of success, but that I could not find myself supporting these guys as Blazers. The closest I came to feeling like a guy was everything Blazer was with Damon, and that's because of the local ties.

Though we had some success, failing seemed to bring a much harsher fall.  I feel that the decline seemed more extreme because the rise lacked the quality of success.

Then it hit me.  Hard, fast and deep.  The true meaning of success lies in the path towards achievement, not the destination.

I know that if and when we win a Championship, it will be from development, character, hard work and determination.  I feel it would be something deeper to be proud of.  But I wanted to ask this question.

I wouldn't trade for Boston right now...
And I'm not ready to give the Celtics the championship yet...

Just like we're practicing cautious optimism with our playoff hopes, I think people should be careful about making the Celtics a lock for the Finals.

First off, it's a long season and if one or two of the "Big 3" get injured, they don't have the bench to pick up the slack. (More simply, Brian Scalabrine isn't Robert Horry)...

Secondly, even if the "Big 3" is healthy, they'll have to go through Orlando before they make it to the finals. Jeff McInnis (I believe) was mic'd up in a recent game in Orlando and he had one of the funniest quotes of all-time during the game - "Man, Dwight was coming down the lane and I was so scared he was going to dunk on me that I just dove on the floor..."

Lastly, Danny Ainge still has time to screw everything up. Rajon Rondo for Sebastian Telfair? Glen Davis for Shawn Bradley? Ray Allen for Gerald Green?

Gerald Green won the SLAM DUNK CONTEST!

No way.
Even if the Celts can make it all the way this year and they just might be able to.  (I've always thought they'd fall in the finals, still think they probably would, and will maintain that until they travel west and have some serious competition far, far from their home court.)

Regardless I want the pleasure of winning after building a team from the ground up, not trading for essentially an entirely new team that I don't have a history with.  I want to make it to the playoffs time and time again as we are making it further and further and further until we are there.

Finally I don't want my team to be awful again in a few years from now.  Good for Boston, but I'll keep Portland thank you!

Right on ...
"I don't want my team to be awful again in a few years from now", like Boston is likely to be.

I've never liked Boston although I had huge respect for Larry Bird, but I'll admit I wouldn't mind seem them win it all this year, only because of Kevin Garnett.  He deserves good things to happen to him.

Yeah
I'm very happy for KG and the other two guys.  I'm just sick and tired of Boston fans.

I guess it doesn't really matter, but
if you remember, even Danny Ainge's first option was to go young and try and get Greg Oden in the draft.  So it's possible even he would trade the Celtics for the Blazers.

But Boston's big three came together way better than I would have thought ahead of time.  If that team stays healthy and wins a championship, that's all that matters.

Theoretically, the Blazers' youth will have more time to go deep into the playoffs and eventually win a title or three than a team with an old core like Boston would.  But getting at least one is the most important thing.

Trading into a championship...
Miami took this path by acquiring Shaq.  Yeah they got their championship, but look at the mess left now.  Outside of Wade and Haslem its mostly junk.  Boston will be headed down this path shortly.

The beauty of building a team like Portland is doing is that this will last for a decade not just 2-3 years (as Boston will see).

Let Us Not Forget
the Celtics have no depth and are relying on 3 sets of old wheels with heavy milage to take them to a title.

I just don't see them winning a championship.

Making matters worse, if they think they were bad before these trades & signings, in two more years they will be so bad even flies won't land on their carcass.

Exactly
They are on a great run but they are overplaying the big 3.  Allen is already down, and who knows what will happen if they don't get some rest by the playoffs.

Boston's bench has played
well, all things considered.  They also have young players, which makes them better off than Miami.  Allen, Pierce and Garnett do play heavy minutes, but none is older than 32.  That's not that old.  Garnett, unlike Shaq, is the type of player that could last until he's 40 without slowing down terribly much.  He's never sat out much of a season, and he anchors the defense.  As long as they have KG, they are way better than Miami even if Pierce and Allen both retired.

Boston plays great defense and have gelled on offense.  I don't follow them that closely, but if you look at their record, you have to consider them a title contender this year.  I'm recording their game tonight against Detroit so I can watch it after the Blazers.  I'm pretty curious.

No trade no way
Boston's future is now - and then what?  They can see the end as their players age.  We can watch our players mature.

Watching Shaq the other night I thought "I dread watching Oden get old" but that's going to be a long way off.  Pierce, Garnett & Allen are all in their thirties.

Boston has 1-3 chances to get it
And really their best chance is this year and next.

After that, they're out.

We have 12 years to get those championships...

Yeah... I like this team better

Plus, I love this team.   I feel we'll deserve it as opposed to really having purchased it as in years past.  We're building smartly and fiscally.

A wink is the same as a nod to a bat!

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
