Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Did anyone else catch B-Roy on Jim Rome?

Very VERY solid interview.  WOW this kid is a amazing.  Level headed had a good intelligent answer for every question.  Oozes confidence, but is not bragadocious.  This kids is going to lead place, you better belive that!  Man, I can't wait for Roy, La and Oden all playing together!

Another thought I had during the interview is with Roy at the helm we will never have a situation like we saw last night with New Orleans, where the team was fighting with itself.  As long as David west is yelling at Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler is yelling at everybody that team will never win anything improtant, but when you have an effortless leader like Roy who can SELFLESSLY gather the team back together and get everyone back on the same page, HE can lead you to a championship!

During the game
at one point Chris paul drove through the lane  and lost the ball out of bounds and he ended up on the floor.  Timeout was called and his entire team walked over to the bench without helping him up. Violet Palmer had to help him up! David West waited at half court for him to rejoin the team.

I'm glad this never happens on our team

That team is going to implode (New Orleans)
You can tell that they don't like each other.  I'd be shocked if they can hold it together all season.  Chris Paul looks like he'd rather be anywhere else.

Yeah, they are very good
but it seems like they really don't like playing together, definitely not the right chemistry to make anything close to a championship run that's for sure.

...And One
West has more wine the Willamette Valley. With just about every shot that he took, through the TV I could hear an audible, "and One," coupled with a look of disgust and aggravation as the referees didn't echo his sentiment. I am surprised he didn't get T'd up. If you can't handle the JOEL, don't bring it in his house.

In Roy We Trust

From this day to the ending of the world,

But we in it shall be remembered-

We few, we happy few, we band of Blazers;

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother

I heard that too
"And 1" means:

  1.  You made the field goal

  2.  You got fouled (and made the free throw)

If you do only one of, or neither of, these things, and yet you scream out "And 1" in agony you are one of two things (or some combo):

  1.  A whiny baby

  2.  An idiot

by leeroyjenkins on Dec 18, 2007 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

Roy does the same thing..
He just yells out HEY instead of AND1. A lot of players scream when they feel any smidgon of contact, it is a pretty smart move.   What Roy doesnt do is complain to the refs for 99% of the game whether he was right or wrong, he just keeps on playing. Its chandelors constant bickering after the play that drives me insane.  When you complain about every call or no-call, regardless of whether your case has any validity to it, you are a whiny baby and an idiot...

yelling "hey" and "and 1"
...are not at all the same in my opinion.  Sometimes a player makes noise out of the effort of the moment, regardless of contact.  "And 1" is an annoying arrogant street ball gimmick.  NBA has refs, players don't need to call that for themselves.

On the street, probably 99% of the time you hear that term it doesn't meet criteria 1 or 2.  I'd guess it's an idiotic 2% that make up that 99%.

Is it kind of like
tennis players involuntary grunting?  I really can't take a tennis match seriously with those erotic screams every single shot.  Hopefully we never have a player who makes those sounds during a game... or ever for that matter.

I agree that yelling "and 1" is more
arrogant and gimmicky than yelling "hey", but the point of the action is the same.  They are both trying to get the officials attention to draw a whistle.  The only real difference between what Roy and Tyson do is the words they use, Roy yells "hey", chandelor yells "and 1".

Its true that sometimes people make noises on the court when playing, but Roy yelling "hey!!" loud enough that I can hear it through the TV broadcast is not just an in game grunt or groan, he is trying to influence the refs into calling a foul, thats the same thing chandelor was doing but with different words.   Its not dirty or whiny, its NBA basketball, lots of players do it.

Tyson becomes a baby because of all his post play bickering at the refs. If Roy doesnt get a call, he just plays on. thats the major difference in my opinion.

My favorite version of this was Arvydas Sabonis.
When he was fouled in the lane it sounded like the king of all walrusses in the throes of rutt.

The sound reminded me
of Arnold Schwartzeneger in Total Recall when he was on the surface of mars with his suit breached and eyes bulging out. It sounded just like that.

Blazers/Hornets contrast
I missed the Roy interview.  But I'm sure it was excellent.  Brandon is a winner thru and thru.  Watching the Hornets implode last night while the Blazers kept their poise was something, wasn't it?  The Jail Blazers couldn't get over the hump because--like the Hornets--they lacked character.  That'll never happen to these Baby Blazers.  From Roy on down to the last guy on the bench, they're a together bunch.

All praise to KP.  Whitsitt didn't believe in chemistry or character.  KP knows better, and we're already seeing the results.

Something else: the Blazers' commitment also shows in their conditioning.  Despite the Blazers playing a back-to-back, it was the Hornets who looked tired down the stretch last night.

I wonder where Whitsitt
...is these days. Is he out of the league? I wonder what he thinks to himself when he looks at the job KP has done and compares it to the fiasco he created. That "I'm not a chemistry major" or whatever the heck he said has got to go down as one of the most infamous and imbecilic comments ever.
When feeling discouraged about the Blazers' learning process, just remember that at least the Jail Blazer era is over.

Nice Find
I still do not understand consulting.  The best joke I ever heard about a consultant was that they get paid to look at your watch and tell you the time.

Rome Interview
Man I got off work at a different time than usual today so I missed Jim Rome.  I usually don't really care for the guy but I hate missing any pub the Blazers get.  I found the audio from the interview on the blazers site.  Here's the link:

I was hoping someone would track that down.

good interview
Rome is a pompous jerk in my opinion, but he's a very skilled interviewer.

I love that clip
but it would have been so much better if "Chris" would have just knocked that pompous little prick out...

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
