The wife is a blazer fan

The biggest difference for me this year is how the wife enjoys the games with me.  Now, the wife has no interest in sports and generally prefers that I do something productive with my time.

Last year Z-bo had a game winning shot... she didn't care.  This year Travis hits the game winner & she almost dropped the baby while hollering.  This change for her is that we have likable players.

I've got a long ways to go before she joins blazersedge, but I also never thought I would come home to see her watching the pre-game show.

you know
you should have a "my significant other" as opposed to spouse.  I'm not married.

Also "she's as big of a fan as I am" and "she likes the blazers, but hasn't become a fanatic yet."

The girl I'm dating likes the blazers but is currently living the game through me.  The fever hasn't caught yet, though I suspect that will change when I fly into town and take her to two games over christmas.

I'm doing the same thing
with my girl.  She's flying in on the 28th and we're going to the game that night.

Totally agree
It was the first thing I noticed in the poll.  Granted, wife does now work for me but wouldn't have a year ago.  My wife has become a bigger and bigger fan over the last few years in particular, goes to roughly 10-15 games a season with me, and is really into the progress of the team.  She loved the Golden State game last night.  She actually picked that one as one of the games she had dibs on because of how much she liked watching them in the Dallas series in the playoffs last year (not that she was routing for them mind you)!  Point is I think there really should be a "My significant other is as big a fan as I am" and "My significant other is into the Blazers, but not as much as I am"  The other thing is what of all the jorga's in the world?  Significant other works much better than wife for a multitude of reasons.  Regardless, fun poll.

Indoctrination underway
I took my wife to a few games last year and she had an OK time. I personaly think she went there to see Brandon Roy, but it got me to the game. Other than that, she had zero interest in watching the games at home...until she watched some in high-def. On some shots she could actually see the beads of sweat on Steve Nash's forehead as he shot free throws. The standard distance shot allowed her to actually see the players, rather than a vague blurry figure moving really fast. It also helped that I got the 2-tuner DVR, so we could record her show, while watching the game. The thing that really tipped the balance was the pause and rewind feature, and my own briliant commentary about the plays. I could back up the action and show her the Pick-and-roll so she understood what the analysts were talking about. We've actually sat down and watched a couple games together this year (not all in HD though), and she's more excited about the team now that she understands more about what she's seeing. She's really looking forward to seeing the team with Oden next year. My Stepford Wife ROCKS!

I still think the Blazers should make a more concerted effort to educate would-be fans about the intricacies of the game rather than assume they understand what is being said.

Two broadcasts would be necessary
One for "the learners" and one for "the think they already know everything about the gamers".

Unfortunately, I think personal lessons, like you're giving, are the way to go. Life is never that easy. It's akin to taking a beginner skiing. It makes it impossible to enjoy yourself (I'd almost rather go to work).

First things first.
We're working on the Oregon Ducks first. Once football sinks in, we'll get her to love the Blazers :)

I'm in the same boat
My wife will go to a sports bar for a Duck game but she won't go for a Blazer's game unless it is the playoffs.  I can see her point simply because there are so few Duck games.

Great diary subject!
My wife is a native of LA and thus, while she was never die hard, she still had a penchant to pull for the L*kers. This was a problem to say the least. But since she didn't really care that much, she started to humor me and quasi-cheer for the Blazers, but mostly just to get me off her back.

But something started to change during the whole Oden-drafting process. I started explaining to her the Blazer's history, and how this lottery pick is so huge. I started explaining to her about how we're such a young team, and how KP cleaned house to radically transform the Jail Blazers into the gem of a team they are now. And you know what? Next thing I know, she's watching games with me and GOING CRAZY!!

Now she knows all the players by name (first and last) 1-12 and is even starting to know their playing tendencies and styles. The thing with her though, more than me, is that she gets very protective of the players and worries about their feelings. That's why I can't let her read these blogs; she loves Jack especially and if she read some of the hate he gets when he's struggling she'd get pissed! (Even though even she is starting to realize that he needs to learn to pass more on the fast break.)

Anway, one thing my wife also, like yours, said is that she thinks the Blazer players are just so dang likeable. I couldn't agree more.

Oh, and here's something that should encourage you  all. When she was an LA team sports fan, she was a curse to her teams. Virtually every L*ker or Dodger game she'd watch they'd lose, to the point where her friends would ask her not to watch. Last year when the Cavaliers went to the Finals, I was rooting for the Cavs and got her sold on the whole LeBron thing. So she decided to cheer for LeBron in the finals and guess what? Swept. This year I had her watch one football game with me. I'm a Packers fan. She watched the Bears-Packers games. Naturally, the Packers lost (which was their ONLY loss until that Cowboys loss like a couple weeks back).

Thus it was a risk to invite her to watch the Blazer games this year. But you know what? Almost every game she's watched they've WON. It's a weird experience for her because she's so used to cheering and being disappointed. If the Blazers can withstand the curse my wife brings with her, they MUST be something special!

When feeling discouraged about the Blazers' learning process, just remember that at least the Jail Blazer era is over.

None of the above
Thanks, Jeremy for remembering I'm "different", but I'm not sure I like being one of "the jorgas of the world" - sort of like "one of the downtrodden"...  hee hee.

For Tweener who doesn't know me ... I'm female, with no spouse or SO and don't live with my parents, so none of your answers fit.  But I'm enjoying the comments.

And FWIW, the phrase "the wife" grates on me - it is so impersonal.  Of course you wouldn't title it "Esmeralda is a fan", but at least "MY wife" elevates her above "the cleaning lady".

Didn't mean to leave you out Jorga
It wasn't a well thought out poll.  I'm glad you commented though... You and TominHawaii are my favorite contributors here.

Without you finally winning the espn.com lottery simulation we wouldn't have got the # 1 pick :)

My wife is a fan
I saw her on Blazers Edge the other day and I was stoked.  Later I found out, she was just trying to buy me a t-shirt for Christmas.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
