Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

W O W

Imagine the blazers go into Salt Lake city to take on the jazz and the following happens:

-The blazer commit 20 turnovers

-The blazers shoot 22 less fg's than the jazz

-The blazers grab 13 less rebounds than the jazz

-Roy scores 16 points on 5-12 shooting and only plays 30 minutes

-LaMarcus never logs a single minute of action

-Boozer drops 29 points and grabs 13 boards

-Oden still has a bum knee and doesnt play

Thats a blazer loss everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Right???

What happened???  How did the blazers control the majority of this game??(The jazz never led after the 1st quarter was over!!!) How did we get the most unprobable victory of Nate's coaching tenure???

WHAT A GAME!!!!

the answer is
two fold

1.)  the jazz were lethargic
2.)  The blazers played as a team for the entire game.  They were ugly and didn't always know what to do but they were a team.

It was beautiful and amazing.

The jazz beat themselves to some extent, but the blazers played hard and together.

It is rediculous
How are are the Blazers going to win less that 35 games and get a high draft pick with games like this?  It is unacceptable!  Another example of poor coaching.  When will Nate accept the fate of this team and let them lose the games they are supposed to lose?

sorry man
I was at the game so Nate HAD to let them go out and win.

I wont be at the game before new years though, so the blazers can lose then.

Sorry
I meant ridiculous.  If I expect losses and don't get them, then the team is letting the fans down.

Sweet Sweet Victory!
I have been looking forward to the Jazz games all year.  And to walk away with a fourth straight win, and a win on the road tastes sweet.
This is the first time this year I have seen the Blazers play completely as a team, even with LMA benched.  Not to say we didn't have our mistakes; turnovers...ouch!  But it was a great team win.

An absolutely spectacular win
After reading what I wrote, I probably should have made it clear that I am on cloud 9 because of this victory.  So unprobable, So sweet, I wish we had a day or two to simmer on it, but its the warriors full speed ahead tommorrow.  We win that one and I might start talking about our chances of making the playoffs!!!

don't get your hopes up
I'm  not trying to be negative, rather, let's enjoy a great victory without setting unrealistic goals for this young team.  It's natural to think of playoffs whenever your team is playing well, but if we start thinking of them as a legitimate possibility, we only set ourselves up for disappointment, when the only true disappointment of the season would be if the blazers failed to play with heart and hustle.

best win of the Nate era
just an impressive win and hopefully a bigtime confidence booster.

Best Blazer Defense I can remember in recent days.
I love that the Blazer game plan was to do what it took to win, rather than trying to look cool.  Portland played zone 90% of the night.  When is the last time you've seen an NBA team do that?  It made up for our poor perimeter defense that we've seen before.  This truly was a total team effort.  Very encouraging to see.

wow
ESPN's highlight clip had about 8 Jazz highlights- "look at this, the comeback continues..."

and then one Blazer highlight- a Roy mid-range jumper.

"oh yeah, but the Blazers won."

ridiculous.

by jksnake99 on Dec 11, 2007 10:42 PM PST reply actions

I was just going to point that out!
Apparently the Blazers didn't warrant a highlight besides a routine Roy jumper.  What's more, ESPN seems to think that our early season 4 game win streak doesn't count.  From their recap:

"Brandon Roy also scored 16 points for Portland, which is on its longest winning streak since winning five straight last December."

Ummm, wrong?  I guess "longest since last month" doesn't have the same ring to it.  It looks like the rest of the country just isn't going to acknowledge our previous streak.

The photo is changed
But I know what you are referring to. Although I think that if we keep bitching they might start to listen to us. That picture was of TRACY Outlaw and they had to change it now that TRAVIS is making some noise. Yeah I have been coming to the conclusion that we are not going to get much press until Oden is back, that ESPN shite was ridiculous, how much did Milsap pay them, all of the highlights were of him.

I sometimes think that we will not have a "super" star on our team as KP has brought together players that prefer to play as a team rather than go for individual accolades. I think that the mix of the humble LMA and Roy will help to counterbalance the national hype that Oden will bring when he does hit the court, and all three will "rise together" (damn catchy slogan) into national acclaim. What will be starnge is that LMA and Roy will be scoring more than Oden but Oden will be the bigger star, just watch.

13.5 point dogs
The line on this game was Portland +13.5. Did ANYONE think we'd pull out a win without LMA, in SLC, when they're trying to stop a 3-game loosing streak? This game made my wife a believer, so they must be for real.

That's funny my wife is becoming a blazer fan too
My wife was watching the pre-game show before I got home.  That would not have ever happened before without likeable players.

Game tonight
I was also at the game, beautiful game by the blazers, crisp passing, wonderful help defense and wow, they were on fire.

Utah has really been struggling lately on the defensive side of the ball and have been blasted in the local SLC media.  I hadn't watched one of their games in a couple of weeks, but they were just terrible.  Martell, Blake and company just burned them time and time again with the extra pass around the perimeter for a wide open three.

And in regards to the earlier comment from the other guy that was at the game, I do have tickets for the New Years Eve game and they do need to win that one as well.

See ya all next Friday night in the Rose Garden for the game against Denver.

Our Zone
the jazz looked like a team that had never seen a zone before.  They had no idea what to do.  A big part of that was them not having deron williams on the floor a lot

What bites is
that we have to play them three more times in the next few weeks. Who made our schedule? We also seem to have a lot of back to backs. More than I can remember us ever having.

Don't get me wrong though.
I love the win, and I very much enjoyed the game!

I hear ya
We punched the much bigger, stronger guy in the school yard and made it home unscaved, but we still got to go back to school and face him 3 more times this month!! He gonna be mad...

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
