Gameday Open Thread: Hornets vs. Blazers

It's the home opener!  (And thank goodness! I don't think the three-day layoff was good for any of us.) I hope the fans represent and are LOUD tonight!

If you're not going to the game (or if you are going and are taking advantage of the new wi-fi system at the Rose Garden) make sure and join in with a comment or two during the game.  Your Blazersedge friends will be eagerly awaiting your pre-game analysis, in-game chatter, and post-game reflections.

If you missed the Jersey Contest prediction form for this game it's right here.

Hornets
Check out one of the sickest box scores you might see this year.

I guess there is no shame in losing to a team that is clicking like the hornets are

As an aside. I remember watching Peja at the Rose Garden when he was a King and he was nailing these ridiculous shots where he would catch and shoot a 3 on the baseline while he was on the move so that he was fading out of bounds. A ridiculously  difficult shot that he was just stroking.

Man were those Adelman Kings fun to watch.

Chirs Paul had
21 assists! that is crazy. and Peja's ten threes isnt to bad either.

Boston's big 3 are actually functioning like a big-3 - unlike most which look great on paper and totally fizzle.

Since I don't live in PDX anymore...
...I won't be able to be at the game tonight (though I've got tix for the Christmas day game when I come back to visit!). But I hope the Rose Garden is rocking tonight - win or lose. I expect a much better fight tonight given what we've been hearing about the practices; and I think McMillan is exactly right in deciding to really emphasize getting the ball into Roy's and Aldridge's hands early and often. As long as I see a commitment to that offensive philosophy, along with spirited effort on D - some real fight - (maybe along with at least some decent minutes for Sergio) I will be cheering tonight. (A win might make me pass out, it'd be so sweet.)

But I want to implore all the fans going to the game tonight to not get down on the team if for whatever reason they struggle again. If they do get down, I'm sure it won't be for a lack of desire and effort on the players' parts (I think we know the character of the guys on our team well enough to know that that's not going to be the case.) I hope our team knows that as long as they're putting in the effort to play the right way, the cheers will be there. That's the kind of fan support a young team needs to get over the steep learning curve they're facing right now.

Man, given how things are shaping up so far in the league, I wonder if any team has a more difficult opening 8 game stretch than the Blazers. Sheesh!

When feeling discouraged about the Blazers' learning process, just remember that at least the Jail Blazer era is over.

Interesting League Start...
Is it me or are there a bunch of undefeated teams and a bunch of teams with zero wins.  If the NBA is trying to get back to the Bulls/Lakers/Celtics era of a decade or two ago, they are well on their way.  it seems like there are a bunch of championship teams and a bunch of "young" teams trying to rebuild.  It's kind of like watching baseball right now which is a little scary.  If I hear another Boston fan tell me about how great their sports franchises are I'm going to throw up.

I'll be at the game tonight losing my voice.  Here's to JJack getting a technical in the first quarter for punching his good friend Chris Paul in the face and sealing his starting spot up for the next few games.  That's what I call leadership!

GO Blazers!

by TKEskippers on Nov 7, 2007 7:46 AM PST reply actions

Well...
That would name Jack 'suspended' for the next few games. His play will dictate whether he starts or not.

by rockingharder on Nov 7, 2007 10:20 AM PST up reply actions

No it's not just you
There ARE a lot of undefeated teams and a lot of winless teams. But look at who's on the winless list. You cannot rationally argue that the Bulls are going to be a bad team this year. I still rate them as a contender for the Eastern Conference title.

7 Hours till Tipoff...
Can't wait to get down with work and head over to Widmer and then the Garden for the first home game of 2007!

Also, I had the chance to watch the LA/NO game last night (thanks, League Pass!) and all I can say is that N.O. is on fire! They remind me of the Kings teams earlier this decade--where they will just wear you down with their quickness. And when you get tired of banging around in the paint they dump it out to Peja in the corners.

Also, I watched a little of the Chicago/LAC game, too. All, I can say is that the Clippers are playing out of their minds right now and Chicago is a very good team. They just got down by 10 early in the second quarter and couldn't recover.
Trust me with R. Patterson and S. Cassell as the cornerstones of LAC's offense...well, I don't foresee them being able to keep up throughout the whole schedule.

Now in terms of tonight.

I am hoping that we come out mad. Stay mad. And then J. Jack comes off the bench possessed to do some damage.

Combine that with what I hope is a loud, sold out Garden and I hope that we can give the Hornets their first loss of the season!

Rip City!!

Here we go Blazers here we go!
Tonight I'm going to try and concentrate on what we do well and really send my energy to supporting our boys in Red and Black. Here are some ideas/predictions for this game.

Ideas:

I'd love to see some man to man coverage - if we dare - with either T. Green or M. Webster seeing serious minutes guarding Paul. I also want to see a defender surgically attached to Peja at the hip. My strategy for tonight would be fluster Paul DENY Peja and have the other three guys on the floor beat us.

Hopes:

I'm also hoping for a T. Green call to nail Paul to the court. Isn't stopping penetrating point guards supposed to be his bag? Remember the great job he did on AI? T. Green on Paul is to me the guard equivalent of having Frye in Vs. Yao. What I mean is you don't REALLY have anyone who can stop the guy, in this case Paul, so you might as well throw out something unexpected that might fluster the superstar at least a bit.

Is anyone else curious what a Green/Sergio back court might be able to do on a second unit? Green plays defense on the 1 and rotates to the 2 on offense with Sergio distributing. Just a crazy thought.

Predictions:

You will see SERIOUS minutes for Sergio. . I also think we will discover quickly that without Joel in the starting unit LMA will get into quick foul trouble. I think the Frye decision will be seen for the mistake it is by the end of the game hopefully we will still eke out a victory. I think Frye can be great in a lot of situations but I don't think adding him to the starting line up at center is the answer. I think moving Jack to the second unit will bolster both guard rebounds and scoring and that might be enough to make the difference for that unit.

Finally while I'm giving tonights game a pass for the Jersey contest I am predicting a Blazer victory by a razor thin score. 110 to 108.

I don't think
that Frye will be playing center. It sounds like he's going to be in some high post sets with LMA working down in the block.

i feel pretty good about today
Hornets coming off a back to back, feeling good about themselves, perhaps looking past the Blazers a bit.

Blazers reeling, desperate, needing a win, big time crowd support due to it being the home opener, several days since the last game.

I'm about 60% confident of a Blazer win tonight.  Make it happen, boys.

Tonight's game is pretty important I think
I know it's only game 4, but the Blazers were totally outclassed by NO (who I have to admit, is much better than I gave them credit for) the other night and it will be interesting to see how this young Blazer team responds.  If all this tough talk from practice translates over into games.

1st Post...Wonders and hopes of tonight game
Wonders:
How many minutes Sergio is going to play.
How JJ will guard Chris Paul especially after the embarrassing loss if he will play at all.

Hopes:
Channing will be able to fight with Tyson Chandler for rebounds.
Sergio's speed will help slowing down Chris Paul.
Webster will continue his hot shooting and strong game.

Let's go out and kick some Hornets' b..., Blazers!

Did you notice this
in Casey's blog?

"The line on tonight's game is Portland +2.5, which is pretty amazing considering the Hornets beat the Blazers by 10 20 less than a week ago. Vegas must be banking on the Blazers being a better home team. If the crowd can get involved early, they might be right."

I thought that was pretty interesting.

I'll be there in spirit, by the tv in person  (which is downstairs and the wired computer is upstairs so I won't be chatting).

I kinda want us to win
I just think, you know, it would be nice.  And maybe then we don't need to fire Nate, trade Roy, and start Sergio to really shake things up.  Cause obviously doing that would help.

Winning ends fan whining more than anything.

I'm hoping Peja's back is sore...
...from carrying such a heavy scoring load around.  He was freaking unconscious last night.  I watched about half of the third and fourth quarters, and he was stroking 25 footers with a hand in his face without hesitation.  My grandma could have picked up 5 assists last night.

I'm looking forward to Joel...
I gave Nate some heat the other day about starting Frye over Joel. After reading some of the reasons in the Behind the Beat column, I sort of agree with it now. I guess I want to publicly say, "Yeah, Nate may be right on this one and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out."

Really, really like the idea of Joel setting picks for Sergio. I want to see the MN boy put some dunks down like he did when Mighty Mouse was around.

by Fizbin on Nov 7, 2007 6:14 PM PST reply actions

I don't think
ANYTHING will work completely...well, except Oden getting back.  But I will settle for not looking so bad defensively on the second unit and still being able to stay close in rebounds for the game as a whole.  If we manage that I will say it was worth the try.

However if our first unit now looks as helpless as our second unit did and the second unit offense ends up being nothing but Trout hucking turn-around jumpers I think I'd rather see Joel on the first unit.  One of the drawbacks is that Channing was a legit scoring option for the bench squad.  He's not going to get the ball as much with the starters.

However my best guess is if this doesn't work within the next few games Nate will simply change it back or try something else.

Good Evening Folks!
I'm looking forward to the home opener. I wish I could have been in the arena.  It's always cool to see the whole team introduced.

I have a real-life work meeting at 7:00 which hopefully I will be able to expedite, finishing around 7:45.  I'll be about ten minutes late after tipoff.  Keep the thread warm for me.

Also since there might be people tuning in for extra information about the game (not being able to see it) it would be cool if someone could point out the details of interesting things that happen as well as reacting to them.  For instance saying, "Lamarcus just drove left right around Chandler and threw it down with a mean two-hander!  Sweet!"  instead of just, "Sweet dunk there!"

It's weird, Dave
but seems to be working.

Blake was getting decent penetrations, (same with Roy and now Jack), but the only thing opening up has been either Trout or Webster (or LMA) in tight spot-up situations.  Fortunately, Martell doesn't seem bothered - he keeps knocking down shots w/o much "rhythm"

No good inside opportunities.  Defense has been reasonably good, they're sagging on Paul and he's been focussed on getting the ball to David West.  Which is good by me - I'd much rather deal with David West than Paul or Chandler.

Przy gets schooled by the West Wing....and then gets a silly foul on Chandler...what is with that guy (CHandler) he seems like he has such animosity toward our guys, and for some reason he is getting the respect of the refs?  I don't get it!

some joke calls
LMA had his hand on chandlers side, just standing there, and chandler smacked his hand twice, and they called a foul.. ya.. read again, they actually called a foul.

Then next trip down Chandler ran through Aldridge and Blake and called LMA for a foul.. yep, I really typed that. It was a complete joke. I hate the NBA.

two were complete BS.  You'll see it on a replay.  I usually don't complain about the reffing, but two of those calls on LMA were truly awful.

You KNOW the refs aren't fixing the game, because calls like that would too obvious.

Pulling out LMA is what screwed up the rotation.  They pulled Frye out with him and brought in Joel and Trout ahead of schedule.

Let's dominate. Aldridge. if the refs call a phantom call on you, please go all out, give them a reason to call a foul.

Blazers with 8 more FG attempts than the Hornets
shooting 33% from the field.

I still feel ok about this game.  We are the fresher team, we just need Aldridge to stay out there and for a few of our shots to drop.

by GimmeIme on Nov 7, 2007 8:48 PM PST reply actions

This is going to be tough.
Our scoring has been haphazard.  Everyone is contributing, but no one is dominating.  Without a hot hand, we're passing without purpose.  LMA is going to have to get it going on the offensive end, without picking up any more fouls.

I wonder if Nate will go back to Joel at center to start the half - someone has to cover Aldridge's back.

It would help if either Roy or Webster would kick it up a notch..

by webted on Nov 7, 2007 8:48 PM PST reply actions

Hmm...
LMA's fouls are obviously not up to him, but it would be nice to see the refs call it fairly, that slap away foul was straight BS...

Great Game
JJ1 should definitely be coming off the bench so he can feel more comfortable looking for his shot.  He is not so confident when he thinks he has to pass first.  Channing on the other hand didn't seem to get his groove all night.  we didn't seem to run as much as he would be suited for, the one fast break dunk seemed to be where his strength lied ie, running the floor and making a screensaver for himself.  Martell logged another complete game with an amazing job on Peja and of course his same silky smooth shot offerings.  I was worried after seeing the game last night that Peja put up that Martell would get scorched, but obviously that didnt happen.  So good job guys...keep it up!
