Jameer Nelson

I know he didn't play particularly well yesterday, but he is a solid PG. I remember when the Blazers were debating between Nelson and Telfair. If we had gone with Nelson, our PG problem may have been at least partially solved. Instead we're still stuck with no PG.

A lot of people (including me) bring up the Williams/Paul draft and are disappointed by Martell for not producing (finally changing this year!). Whereas if we simply didn't have Telfair, we would have most likely gone with Paul.

Telfair essentially cost us 3 PGs. 2 superstars and 1 solid young PG.

I just don't feel like this team will get anywhere until we have a competent PG at the helm. Jack has showed his value as a scoring combo guard off the bench, so he's no longer a viable PG candidate. Sergio simply isn't that good. Blake's not a great PG either. Once Oden comes back, maybe we can get away with an average PG, but until then we really have no hope.

Woulda - Coulda - Shoulda...
Hindsight is 20/20, but maybe we're missing something here. KP obviously likes the Blake-Jack-Sergio trio, otherwise he would've moved Jack for the Hawks pick at #11 and taken Acie Law IV (the most polished point guard in last year's draft)...

I guess, we won't really know until our "cap space in 2009" plan is unveiled, but there's no doubt that the list of point guards we've passed up is growing.

Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Acie Law IV, Mike Conley (could've taken him #1!), Javaris Crittendon, Rajon Rondo, Jordan Farmar, Delonte West (2004), Beno Udrih (2004), Chris Duhon (2004), Leandro Barbosa (2003 - instead of Travis Outlaw), Juan Carlos Navarro (2002 - instead of Qyntel Woods), Jannero Pargo (undrafted), Smush Parker (undrafted)...

We almost picked up Leandro Barbosa for a second round draft pick(!) but Shareef Abdur Rahim failed his physical.

'09 plan
Assuming Sergio and Kaponen don't pan out, I hope the Blazers don't wait until '09 to acquire their "final" point guard.  The team should be starting its championship push by then, and that'll be tough with a new floor leader.  Chemistry takes years to develop, so I'd hope that the '09 cap space pickup would be a quality role player, not a core guy.

Possible roles for that '09 acquisition might be: 6th man "instant offense" guy (ala Stackhouse); lockdown defender and dependable 3-point shooter (ala Bowen); devastating rebounder to back up LMA and/or Outlaw (ala Millsap).

Telfair was basically traded for Brandon Roy
I would trade Brandon Roy straight up for either Paul or Williams.  That isn't going to happen so I will just be very happy with the Telfair & Theo for Roy & Raef deal.

Nelson has a limited ceiling
He is not much of a shooter and not much of an athlete and is ok for where he is but will he get any better? Telfair may still work out but HS point guards or 1 and done point guards are not often going to produce. Nelson played 4 years didn't he. Paul and Williams played 3 I think. Even so they struggle against Billups and Kidd and Nash. Telfair will someday be a very good PG - if he can stay out of trouble. Maybe a bg if. I am glad we drafted him because it was that draft that likely convinced Paul Allen to bail on Patterson and Nash and we get MVP=KP instead. Now that is truly an inspired pick.

Mike Rice Commentary
It was Outlaw or Aldridge going around for a dunk and Mike Rice says, "Take that you 5'4" Jameer Nelson!"

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
