Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Who Is Our Long Term PG?

Simple question: who do you think will be our long term PG?  Note that the question is 'who will be,' not 'who do you want in a dream scenario.'  Is Blake enough?  Will Jack return to the starting lineup?  Is the answer in the draft?  Will one of our Euro's step in?  Will we pick someone up in '09?  Can Roy shift over?

A lot of questions, and not a lot of easy answers.  I think that PG does appear to be our most glaring weakness going forward.

Personally, I'm not absolutely sure.  I don't think Blake is quite frankly talented enough in the long term, although I really like the idea of him as a backup PG.  Jack has nicely eased into his role as second unit scorer, and I think this is probably his future role.  Moving Roy over doesn't make much sense to me; I'm not sure if he can break the press or defend quicker guards.

As I see it, we draft a PG in this draft, most likely Rose or Collison depending on our draft spot, and then see if he, Sergio, and the Playboy can stick.  If we don't see much out of them, we make a play at someone in two years.

I'm guessing
So few people vote for the Finland kid because they haven't seen him play.  he's sergio's age or younger and much better and well rounded.

Petteri Koponen Links
I couldn't find anything with him really playing over seas, but here are a few clips for you guys.

http://blazersclips.blogspot.com/search/label/Petteri%20Koponen

It's only summer league, which is why I wanted to FIND his overseas clips.  I think they'd be much more reflective.

I saw the kid play live, and the Finland kid is good AND young.

This years draft, I believe, will be discovered to be as much of a steal as last years.

We have greg, we snagged Rudy, and we got the finland kid.

Hey Ratbastard!
Could not agree more. Those 3 are coming into camp next year will bring a whole new look to this team. Oden with a seasoned LMA beside him? C'mon! Pko' will be the suprise. Rudy will simply contribute.

This will be phase 2 of 3.

Our sure to be high profile free agent pick up in 09' being the final phase before we hit our full stride.

Listen up people, it's all good, I mean every day good. BRoy & LMA continue to prove they ARE our future, what more could you want or ask as an investment for your dream team to come?

Peteri is very overrated
I've argued this so many times, i'll just let the future prove my point. he will never start for any NBA, ever. next year he'll be lucky to average more than 3 minutes a game. i saw him in person in summer league and was not at all impressed. he was out of control and looked totally in over his head. in addition to that impression from watching him on the court, his summer league stats back that up - horrendous.

Interesting
were you there the first week or the last week?

I was there the last week and he looked good.  I liked his flow, his shots, the combo of vision and willingness to create for himself.

Sergio wowed me with a flawless cross over dribble in the preseason.  I liked him before he was even drafted and was thrilled to have him.

I honestly think the finland kid will be better for us.  He's balanced in his play where sergio is pure offense.  We don't have the defense to make up for his lack, yet.

Honestly, I think I'm one of the few people who "overrates" the finland kid.   I don't really see that many people agreeing with me on this one.

I think sergio will be awesome, but not for our team.  Unfortunately I don't think he does or will fit, and that's too bad.  Nate will never be patient enough to play him and so he'll never learn.  He really just needs to go to the suns and flourish there.  I think he'd do well.

I believe the finland kid fits our current style of play and he has the ability to defend and create his shot a little better.

yeah, he's young.  19 even.   I've seen him play, and I liked what I say.  He moves well, sees well, and shoots well.

sergioFTW
how many total minutes did Petteri Kopponen play in Summer League?

Answer:  Not many.

Certainly not enough to form the strong opinion that you have of this kid's potential.

I understand you love Sergio and will happily trash other players unfairly to make your case for him, but in this instance I think your assessment is over-the-top and unfounded.

If you are so sure he will never start in the NBA, then you might wish to write KP a letter and explain to him how stupid he was for trading up to get this kid.

You might also want to courtesy copy all of the overseas scouts employed by The Trailblazers as well.

They would all love some of your insight into how they overrated this young PG prospect.

I dunno
about our starter but we have definitely found a 6th man in Jarrett "Big Money" Jack.

I couldn't agree more
This has really been one of if not the most encouraging developments this season.  While Jack was an inbetween starter, he could be excellent in the future as our first guy off the bench.

If you view team development as defining seven or eight roles, and then finding the players to fill those roles out, Jack has established himself perfectly.  I liken it to a starting pitcher falling out of the rotation, only to become a dominant closer.

Jacks game is not involving, and we're fit to run
I really envision Koponen being the more calm, focused, cerebral PG who defers the ball more, is a better shooter/defender and starts, but can still run with Sergio being the energy killer off the bench who still plays 20-25 minutes and forms a mean unit with Rudy that just burns teams that are sleeping. I think this could be a solid rotation if people progress well (optimistic I know) in two years. Lots of great passers.

Koponen/Sergio
Roy/Fernandez
Webster/(Roy-Mcroberts)
Aldridge/Mcroberts
Oden/Pryzbilla

that teams looks really balanced and fun, with a great 9 man rotation. I don't include Jack, Outlaw, Miles, Frye, Blake, Miles, Lafrentz, or Green because I just don't see them being big contributors with the rest of this team and the way it fits. Martell can kill from outside with Oden to draw defensive attention and more heady PG play, whereas Rudy just fits better than Jack in our system, not needing to create on his own but making PG's jobs easier with constant movement, and his chemistry with Sergio. And Outlaw is purely an isolation player, no idea of how to play within an offense. I'm really hoping Mcroberts surprises with his tenacity and passing skills. If he can rebound solidly, pass as well as we hear, and add a mid-range jumper, he will fit perfectly for us in the second unit. Outlet passers, and an electric backcourt!

what do you think we could get for Jack, Frye, Outlaw, and our pick? (maybe not all at the same time). One need I see is a solid stopgap PG who can help us get established in a faster offense while playing solid D, but won't get in the way of our future. The one guy I see who fits perfectly is Miller, and it's feasible we could get him w/o screwing up our cap space...I'd love it.

Of the guys we have...
... only Blake and Jack have shown they can start.  My own opinion, swayed by some of the evaluations made here at BE, is evolving to think that Jack still has some significant holes as a PG to fill, but looks good as a third guard.

Blake also has room for further development.  He doesn't have as much to do to be at least league average.  That's probably good enough.

The rest of the guys - all unproven.  Right now Sergio is the only one I'd give even a ghost of a chance at becoming a full time starting NBA PG.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
