Could Starbury's Fallout be to the Blazer's Benefit?

I'm sure you have read recently that Stephon Marbury has recently left the Knicks team during their West Coast road trip.  An article from Chris Sheridan states that even though he has a bloated contract, Stephon's trade value is $20 million coming off the books in 2009.

Here is what concerns me: We are looking at being major players in 2009 with Francis and LaFrentz coming off the books.  Whoever picks up Marbury will be in a great position to bid us up on whatever free agents we have our eye on (some interesting names in Sheridan's article, can you image Igoudala on our squad?  Roy at point, Martell at the 2?)  We could be in the best shape if we trade Darius, LaFrentz, and Jack to New York for Marubury and Freddie Jones.  Something to think about at least.

One addition
Of course he would never see the light of day in our rotation.  Not sure if we would buy him out, or just have him ride the pine.

Yeah,
They would just buy him out, and if the Blazers are going to do that, why not just buy out the guy already on the team?  I guess if they did the trade, the Blazers would be off the books for Darius's $9,000,000 in 2009/10.

What the the Blazers really need to do, is build the team around Darius and make him the focal point of the offense.

Shoots
I messed up twice, I meant to reply to the first response and then I should have said, "guys already on the team."

Also, my sarcastic font is broken, so I could not apply it to my second point.

That was my thought
Instead of a large chunk in 09, with Darius in 10 you would get all the benefit in 09.  Swap Jack for Freddie Jones on SG off the bench, and let McRob mop up scrub time at the backup PF/C slot currently being held by LaFrentz.

Blazers likely won't deal Jack
I can't imagine him being a part of any deals. Everyone knows that he has a ton of potential, and Blazer Nation would hate to see him lighting it up in a Knicks jersey

Exactly
Why deal a good player that fits the culture in a fire sale on Marbury.

Good point about dropping Miles, but 42Mil is a lot of salary to eat even for a guy like Paul Allen

I LOVE where your head is at
A man after my own heart, that would perfect to trade Raef and Miles which works on Real GM trade checker http://www.realgm.net/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=4286423 maybe throw in all of our 2nd round picks also.

And then we would then buy him out as Raef will not see many minutes this year and is pretty much bought out and Miles shouldn't see any minutes as well so essentially we are already "buying" Miles out since he is not playing and we are paying him. Then we could go out and resign Ha as a warm body if we needed some more bigs!! HA

This would also free up 2 spots for next years crop of players a draft pick and Rudy. If we cannot get this trade done we should buy-out Raef to free up another spot next year and work out that thing where we get money back when he is signed with another team like with Francis, it should pay for our first round pick.

It would be funny that we trade for 2 NY PGs and buy them both out and reunite Miles and Zbo

LOVE that idea KP get on it!!

Irony
The irony of reuniting ZBo and Miles maybe worth 42 x 10^6 dollars. I hope Paul Allen likes irony.

I was thinking the buyout
For Marbury would be like Francis, and Marbury will demand more than the 3 Million Francis got as a free agent.  So the Blazers get a little relief when Marbury signs with another team, we open up spots in the meantime, and we get Francis and Marbury coming off the books in 09 where we would control the Free Agent market.  If someone else picks him up, we have a team with $20 million in cap space compared to our $25 million in cap space which would mean we would have to pay Rashard Lewis prices to get a coveted free agent that summer.  It's not just what it does for our books if we do it, it's what it does to another team's books if we don't!

by mpressive on Nov 14, 2007 8:09 AM PST up reply actions

No more buyouts!
Trading for Marbury to buy him out doesn't work for me.  Yes, you might get rid of Miles (although honestly, I don't see what NY gains by replacing Marbury with LaFrentz and Miles).  But don't overestimate the value of having a lot of cap space.   In the past couple of years, the only marquee player to switch teams via free agency has been Rashard Lewis, and he did so by getting Orlando to overpay him by a wide margin.

The Blazers need an actual player with an expiring contract when the trade deadline rolls around in 2009.  If they buy out Marbury, they have no trade options.  They have to hope that the potential free agents don't sign extensions before summer 2009.  And then they have to hope that they can convince them to come here.  And since many of them are restricted, they have to hope that their teams won't match the offer we make them.

I think it is far more likely that, if a new, valuable player arrives in Portland in 2009, he will come via trade.  Buying out another player gets us more cap space but takes away the entire trade market for us.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
