How long are you a rookie?

Just an interesting thought to throw out...

Next year when Oden is totally healthy and tearing up the Association, does he qualify as the Rookie of the Year next year - since he didn't play a lick this year - or is he a sophomore?

On All-Star weekend would he play for the rookies in the Rookie/Sophomore game?

Does he get to forced to carry veteran's bags, go tet donuts or get thrown in the pool like Green?

My guess is no on all these accounts - but what do you think?

still a rook
If Oden does not appear in a game this year, he will count as a rookie in all ways for NBA awards etc.

There have been 28 y.o. Euro rooks
Being a rookie is defined as not having any experience in the NBA. It's not a matter of age and its not even a matter of basketball experience. It's a matter of experience in the NBA. You can be in a coma till you're 33 and then wake up and play as a rookie. Or you could be a chain smokin' Euro with 10 years experience in an Italian league. As long as you don't have NBA experience, you're a rook.

Hopefully he will not be
My hope is his recovery will be faster than expected and he will be back in time to get a couple of games under his belt before going into next year.  It would be great if we could see him in May.

You are decidedly NOT the voice of reason.
There is absolutely no benefit to playing Oden this season given the documented attempts of players who have come back early from microfracture surgery. A couple of games against NBA competition is simply not even close to worth even the slightest risk of Oden re-injuring his knee and missing perhaps another season or worse jeopardizing his career.

If you are the voice of reason, then I hope KP, Nate, Paul Allen, Oden, and his doctors are all freaking lunatics.

Green got off easy...

...he doesn't have Ruben Patterson as a teammate.

Just think next year, with all the rooks we'll potentially have.  Oden.  Next year's #1.  Koponen.  Rudy.  Freeland, if he comes over.  Possibly a second-rounder next year as well.  Phoenix's #1--wait, Seattle has that.

If it keeps up, pretty soon the rookies will be hazing the veterans.

Though I can't see them throwing Oden into a wading pool.  Not a nice thing to do to a senior citizen.

So Oden gets hazed next year
Along with Koponen, Rudy, and yeah, Freeland. Plus our new # 1. They'll displace all the water in the pool.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
