Roy Tweaks Ankle; Results of MRI available at 6pm

From Oregonlive.com

"Brandon should be okay,'' McMillan said. "He tweaked his ankle a little bit in the warmup drill, so just for precautionary measures we took him out. I didn't see what happened. He said he came down and didn't feel right. So we decided to take him out and see what was going on.''

The injury doesn't appear to be related to the left heel injury that caused Roy to miss 20 of the first 25 games last season. In fact, McMillan said Roy wanted to continue practicing."

Derrick Rose, anyone?

I don't mean to be gloomy and doomy...
but we haven't had luck with regard to these types of news items.  They always start off 'precautionary' and end with 'we're trying to stay positive about the recovery process.'

"Paranoia strikes deep..."
This doesn't sound like a typical, came-down-on-someone's-foot sprained ankle, does it?  Amazing how quickly you can go from fantasies of shocking the league (i.e., making the playoffs) to half-hearted hopes of a lottery silver lining...

sprained ankle is no big deal
i sprained my ankle big time about three weeks ago, second degree sprain complete with partially torn tendons and the like, and as bad as it was at the time, after a week of no use, an a week of very careful steps i'm walking fine right now and will be playing again in about 10 days, and that's without the loving attention of team trainers and medical experts. Roy's is a 2nd degree sprain at worst (3rd degree, you know instantly cause some stuff stops working), and they are probably just checking to see if he he needs to stop using it for a couple weeks (2nd degree) or if it is just a first degree and he can keep using it.

True
It's a pretty routine injury in sports, and basketball in particular.  However, I can understand if it gives some of us knots in the stomach considering recent events.

I'm good either way, although it would be nice to see Roy in the home opener if possible.

Sprained ankle?
Well, first, a sprained ankle can be a VERY big deal.  Back in my hoops days, I once came down hard on someone's foot and wasn't right for 6 months afterwards.  I did ice, Ibu, ultrasound--the whole nine yards.

But what's ominous about this Roy situation isn't the possiblity that he has a severely sprained ankle.  Rather, it's that his ankle didn't feel "right" despite his not being aware of having tweaked it at all.  Most likely, of course, this is nothing.  But it is unusual, and after what's happened to the Blazers lately, that's cause for concern.  (No doubt this is why they ordered an MRI instead of just telling Roy to sit out the rest of the day.)

I'm with you
I had never sprained my ankle once in 20 or so years of playing basketball until around this time last year.  My official diagnosis was, "You sprained the crap out of it".  It took about six months before there was no discomfort at any time.  I played basketball on it before then, but I sure didn't feel comfortable about it.

I would say this is likely no big deal, but I wouldn't say that every sprained ankle is a trivial injury.  Emeka Okafor missed a good half of the season a couple years back with a sprained ankle.

by HarryManback on Oct 2, 2007 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah
I agree.  A few years back I ripped the heck outta my ankle but was able to "play through it".  I'll never do that again.

The next day my ankle was gone, replaced by the goodyear blimp.  Not cool.  Took about 5 months to be o.k. Took about 7 months before I was confident to play on it.  Ice'd all the time and took my glucosamine and ibu, all the time too. And yes, I got x-ray's and went to the DR as soon as I knew it was bad in the morning.

Better off making sure, rather than waiting for more damage to occur.  I'd rather hear it now, then in the 2nd week of the season with torn ligaments and major damage.

Better off missing the beginning of the season rather than the middle... besides posturing by the team.  We all know that Roy's a starter, if he was out this would open up playing time for someone.

Ugh indeed!
Not that it's going to come to that (fingers crossed), but I suspect Nate would play Blake and Jack together as his starting guards.

3rd degree
hey guys, any sprain where there is a 6 month recovery time is a 3rd degree sprain where there is a complete tendon tear. in those situations, the recovery time can be serious, but to a medical professional a 3rd degree sprain is instantly obvious, so it is highly unlikely that is what Roy has. With a 3rd degree sprain, getting it professionally dealt with is essential and usually involves surgery and then a cast for a month, as well as extensive physical therapy if you want to get it back to where it was before the injury, which might explain the trouble you guys had.

I have to politely disagree
with you.  I did go to the hospital and I did get X-rays. I did have them look at it, I did not have to get rehab.  Rehab is not the end-all solution to every injury.  I blew my patella out and did not have any rehab (ala mighty mouse), simply because I could not afford it.

Same goes for my 3 torn ligaments in my ankle when I was 19.  That was a 3rd degree sprain.  I knew it right away, I couldn't lift my foot.  The last bad sprain, I continued to play for about an hour, then realized it was worse than I thought.  I then drove my manual transmission jeep through rush hour, stop and go, traffic.  So I have to say that it might be the case the majority of times, but not in all cases, does your logic apply.

just sayin...  although there was a 12 year difference between the injuries...  Sometimes it does take that long for full recovery on 2nd degree injury to ankle.

peace.

I swear Damon never recovered from
the sprained ankle he underwent shortly after arriving to us from toronto.

by jayjaylbh on Oct 2, 2007 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Not true
As I said, I wasn't right (100%) for 6 months, yet I had no ruptured (completely torn) tendon or ligament.  (The MRI confirmed that.)  I suspect that the other guys who posted had similar injuries, because with an unrepaired tendon or ligament rupture, the ankle would NEVER be 100% again.  So: call it a 2nd & 1/2 degree sprain.  It exists and isn't uncommon.  Your ankle swells up like a balloon, and remains painful and unstable for a long, long time.  Even with NBA-level PT, you're going to be out of action for months, not days or weeks.

All of which has nothing to do with Roy's situation, whatever that may be.  Reportedly, there was no obvious precipitating incident (e.g., Roy landing on someone's foot and subsequently screaming and rolling around on the floor!).  If there's something going on with his ankle at all, likely it's not a sprain.  My paraniod mind goes to things like stress fractures.

or TALUS BONES!!
See the update @ Oregonlive.com.  Here we go again!

Of course, KP is saying this is no sweat.  But we know otherwise; this damn bone is nothing but trouble for Roy and for the Blazers.

by hurryup09 on Oct 2, 2007 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

What's next?
Lamarcus Aldridge decapitates spontaneously!  Results of MRI available as soon as we can pick up his head from where it's rolling around on the floor.

From Coach McMillan:  "There was nothing special that caused this.  He was just running down the floor, getting back on defense after a break.  He turned a certain way and it just popped off."

But seriously, I'm not going to consider a sprained ankle any more serious than...well...a sprained ankle until I hear differently.  We're probably all just a little too Oden-sensitized.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
