Quarter Season Awards: Most Disappointing

Since we're officially at the 1/4 mark of the season (or will be after the first half of the next game anyway) we're handing out Quarter-Season awards.  Scroll up and down today's posts to register your vote on them all.

Please pick ONLY ONE player.  No fence sitting allowed!  One poster, one vote!  That's the fun/challenge of it.  Feel free to explain your reasoning along with your vote.

Magloire
This one is easy.  I never followed him closely until now, so I have no idea if his level of play has really dipped from his allstar year or not.  All I know is his play for the Blazers has been more consistent than any other player... CONSISTENTLY DISAPPOINTING THAT IS! Zing!!

Too many turnovers, bad hands, slow.  50% free throw shooter.  I know we're gonna trade him, but it'd be nice if he helped us out by making other teams want him.  Hopefully they aren't paying attention and will just assume he'll be a solid post player.

He hasn't complained about lack of playing time though, and I am glad about that.  But he hasn't outplayed anyone else, so he can't have that much to complain about.

Martell Webster...
I never thought he'd be a star, but his early season play hasn't even lived up to my expectations.

He is showing some great signs lately, though.

by ken @ Blazer's Edge on Dec 7, 2006 6:27 AM PST reply actions

Magliore
Webster had him by a nose going into the last two games, but he slowed his disappointment train up recently.  Mags has been playing like garbage, but he still gets minutes.  I can't fiqure it out.

by TearsforDuckworth on Dec 7, 2006 6:54 AM PST reply actions

Joe ... but
through no fault of his own!  Before and after the injury Nate seems reluctant to play him for any extended minutes.  Sure, he may pick up a couple of quick fouls, but that's almost like an excuse not to play him much for the rest of the game.  I can't figure what's going on as we need his defense and pick setting.

Magliore was not a disappointment to me as I never expected anything from him in the first place.  It was simply a lousy trade.

by TwoDeep on Dec 7, 2006 7:28 AM PST reply actions

Mags
Martell has been dissapointing. But I still see a lot of potential in him. I don't watch much East Coast B-Ball so I don't know Mags history. I just can't believe that someone paid him THAT much money. He must have been good a few years ago. He isn't now. He's the definition of "sucks". I'd rather have Chris Dudley posting up.

by OCBlazerfan on Dec 7, 2006 7:50 AM PST reply actions

I have to say Joel
Last season I got a chance to see Mags play with the Bucks numerous times. At the end of the day it was pretty clear that he was possibly the slowest, most uncoordinated center in the league.
Joel, seemed on the verge of a breakthrough both offensively and defensively. Joel should be getting 3 blocks and (at least) 10 points a game to warrant that contract he got.

by DropstepJ on Dec 7, 2006 7:57 AM PST reply actions

Darius
I was so sure that this was going to be his breakout year!  I thought he had really turned a corner this offseason.  This team will never amount to anything without a focused Darius.....or somethin'.  (or was it never amount to anything with a Darius....I always forget.)
It wasn't the first time I'd been kicked in the cherries and called a rat by a woman, but it was the first time I didn't mind.

Travis Outlaw
I just keep thinking, "This will be his night" and it's not.  Then, "This will be his night" then it's not. I am only looking for some consitency here.  For a guy with more ability than Moses you would think the Blazers front office would get this guy enrolled in some classes on concentrating and focusing, or some ritalin, I don't know why he can't figure out the schemes and how to work within them!  I probably wouldn't be so hard on him if it weren't for the two games of brilliance this year, it makes be yearn for more when I see the flash of potential, but it is his IQ that needs help!

by GimmeIme on Dec 7, 2006 8:37 AM PST reply actions

Zach
I was thinking of Webster, but he's one year removed from high school and is really lacking fundamental that will take years to learn. My expectations don't start until year 4 or 5.

Then I though Outlaw. But he has a severe type of asthma and is so heavily medicated that it reeks havoc with his game as the medication acts like a sedative.

Then I considered Godzilla, but he was hurt and had surgery and it's not fair to single a player out for those reasons.

So it came down to Maglorie or Zach.

Maglorie actually may be the best choice as he has been all too often weak & ineffective.

However, what steams me about Zach are two things. First, his off court problems DO have a negative effect on the team and he can easily do something about that- but won't. Second, he still refuses to play defense. He can score all he wants to, but if he gives more on defense than he scores on offense, then it's still a negative effect during the game. And, again, he can do something about it- but won't.

by blazerprophet on Dec 7, 2006 8:51 AM PST reply actions

BP...
I disagree with a few of the things people have said in these "awards" but mostly I don't have any argument.  But ... let's look at this for just a second.

I'm not enamored with Zach.  He is not my favorite player by any means and if the Blazers found a way to trade him and get good value in return, I would not be singing the blues.

However, given his performance last year, and what he's done this year, with his better passing (and his acceptance of the fact that he needs to pass sometimes,) with his renewed effort to learn the game, defense aside, how can you call him a disappointment?   Disappointment means you had certain hopes that weren't met.  Did you honestly expect Zach to be 'better' than he has been?

I'm not going to argue the point, I'm simply asking if you are being truly objective here.

by ken @ Blazer's Edge on Dec 7, 2006 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

U
Well, I do see your point.

I guess it's that I was expecting a lot from him this year. Dedicated to getting back inside (he has done- 'A'), passing from double teams (done a better job than I expected- 'B+'), dedicating himself to defense (clearly an 'F') and be more of an assett to the community ('F') and his teammates ('F').

Given how long he's been in the league and how well he should understand what is required of him, he's been a big disappointment. When I grade a player 'F' in 3 of 5 expected catagories, then I have to say I'm disappointed.

by blazerprophet on Dec 7, 2006 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

ur hatred
for zach is digusting.

by junit3123 @ Blazer's Edge on Dec 7, 2006 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

Why?
I can see that Zach has gotten your goat.
What you say about Zach is reactionary and petty.
No, lets go over your "F's".
Dedicating himself to defense - Zach in not even the worst defender on the team. (Webster, Juan). We just signed two defensive specialists who cant score (Pryz, Udoka) and Nate has been saying that Zach has been TRYING harder on D.

More of an assett to the community - This one burns me. How about willing the Blazers to some wins. Nothing generates excitement more than W's. When we got out to a surprising start and Zach was looking like an MVP candidate is that somehow not good for the community? He has done all of the community outreach programs that the Blazers have set up.......just like the rest of the team. Is he not an assett to the community because you dont like the way he lives? the choices he makes? arent you glad that there's not a blog where we discuss every mistake youve made as a young man?

Assett (commitment to) his teammates - I dont know where you get the idea that the rest of the team doesnt LOVE playing with Zach. It seems to me that almost every quote from a Blazer has given Zach huge respect and admiration. He is honestly trying to do what the team wants him to do. Now if coach McMillon asked that he turn into Tim Duncan, I dont think he could oblidge, but when Nate says "score the ball, because the rest of these youngsters are inconsistant", then Zach does what Zach does best. Zach puts up 18.8 shots a game................do you think Nate wants him to put up any less?  How about the 11.5 boards a game hes houling down. not bad for a guy who can barely jump. Im afraid that the media has made him out to be a selfish bastard. I just dont believe that's true. I think Zach wants to win. period. Roy was getting shots when he was playing............you know why? becuase he takes them.  now, Zach is not one of my favorite players in the league and truth be told, I wouldnt mind if they traded him for some pieces with serious upside, but to degrade what he means to this basketball team and coaching staff is ridiculous. How many wins would we have without Zach?

by DropstepJ on Dec 7, 2006 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

COMPLETELY
agree thanks dropstep..

if his teammates didn't like him they wouldn't of voted him captain..

and if we didn't have zach, say cut him off the roster, we'd have 2 wins max.. and probably 0.

Magliore
This team would be better with the players that were traded to get him.  Hard to understand how he could have been an All-Star just two years ago - he isn't old enough to blame it on age.

Joel
Webster's good games in 2 of the last 3 outings gets  him out of this space.  I hope to see that continue from him.

Mags has been awful, but I didn't really think he was going to do much.

Joel was looked at as a great re-signing for us- some great teams wanted him.  I really expected more from Joel.

Mags
He just doesn't look like a very good player. At least his contract is valuable.

If not for Magloire I'd have gone with Travis. Travis does some good things, but he still looks timid the majority of the time, and in professional sports, timid doesn't win, ever.

by goonerluke on Dec 7, 2006 3:18 PM PST reply actions

I'm not highly disappointed
in anyone...

I didn't expect anything of Magloire.  I'd hoped for more from Martell, but I keep forgetting this is only his 2nd year. Travis is keeping his head above water. Dixon is Dixon.

I guess my biggest disappointment is with that injury dude - the one that made Roy's heel flare-up, whacked Martell in the back, made Murphy's knee knock Joel out of commission, and put Raef on the sidelines.

Oh yeah, and the drs. who apparently didn't do Darius' knee right the first time. (Maybe a blessing..?)

And Paul Allen who won't promise he won't take our team away.

So, Dave, if I MUST vote (since I commented), I guess you can put a very reluctant tally behind Martell's name.

by jorga on Dec 7, 2006 3:25 PM PST reply actions

MARTELL
early pick in the draft, and hyped up this offseason. Last year I understand, this year no excuse. I know he is young but all the highschoolers who have came in the league and have been succesful show a little consistant sign of having talent in the first two years and Martell has not.

by wolfman97080 on Dec 7, 2006 3:42 PM PST reply actions

Mags, I guess...

... if for no other reason than he's an ex-All Star.

Not that much was expected out of Jamaal, other than a potentially useful trade in the future.

Other smaller disappointments:

  • Webster's been disappointing until recently, though I'll chalk it up to the back injury.
  • JJ's defense has been disappointing--on the other hand, nobody else can stop the Baron Davis's of the world either.  And he's played well against guys like Chauncey Billups, Chris Paul, and a few other notables.
  • Haven't seen much of Prz, even after coming back from the Great Nadwhacking.  Not sure why...
  • Dixon, as others have noted, is Dixon.  When he struggles with his shot, the Blazers are much more likely to lose.  Long term, I'd move him for someone else.
  • Outlaw is improving, though still frustrating.
  • Graham is cut-fodder, though I didn't expect anything out of him.
  • Disappointed that Darius showed up in such bad shape--even if the knee ain't right, you still can do things like swim, lift, bike, etc.  OTOH, I'm not terribly sad that he's not around.
  • Disappointed that the team is so lousy on the boards.  This is mainly against the guards--our bigs do a credible job of rebounding.  Nobody in particular to single out here.

by EngineerScotty on Dec 7, 2006 3:47 PM PST reply actions

Martell
Get past a few points here:

- He's only 20!

He was also picked 6th in the draft.  That considerably ups the expectation level to the point where you should be contributing more than he has.

- He's been injured

Sounds like his spasms are mostly gone, and it's a mental issue at this point.

____

Now that we have that out of the way, I think Martell is disappointing because his poor performances have nothing to do with his concentration (See Darius), level of athleticism (See Magloire), or anything to do with his game.

At summer league, I saw a guy take over the game.  He was commanding the ball most times down the court, and on defense he was ordering people around. In the huddles, he was harping on people for not getting back, and generally displaying all the leadership that you'd expect from a guy that a team passed up Chris Paul to get.

This season (whether it was a result of his back spasms or not) he seems to have heaped so much expectation and pressure on himself that he's unable to plug into the game mentally.  This is different from Travis Outlaw syndrome, because it's obvious that Martell is a very bright and intelligent player... probably on the upper end of NBA players.  He just overthinks out there.

It's funny, because the fans watch the games and wonder why Martell doesn't shoot more often.  The easiest conclusion to draw would be that it's something that Nate told him to do, but we know that Nate has had to pull Martell aside several times and tell him to hoist up more shots.

Fortunately, Martell seems to be coming around, with 19 points last night and 18 the night before.  Even during his 4 point stint against Detroit looked aggressive--he was taking it to the hole... he just couldn't get the shots to fall.

It's crucial that Martell continues to progress in these next few games and get his confidence back up, because when Brandon Roy comes back in a week or so, those SG minutes are going to dry up and Martell won't get the same amount of shots that he could be getting right now.

- Sam

I like something you said here, Sam...
I too saw Martell being a very vocal leader this past summer and maybe I had some higher hopes because of it.  I'll have to analyze this idea.

Thanks.

Magloire..
he gets my vote.  Remember how excited everyone was because we were getting an "all-star" center?  He's not playing any better than Brian Skinner would've, plus we could have kept Steve Blake.

Mags is a turnover machine.  Only a slight upgrade over Ha.

Big Man Mags has to be #1, with Martell at a close #2.

by rockingharder on Dec 7, 2006 5:58 PM PST reply actions

magloire...
...but maybe that's just my expectations.

Magloire takes it, but Martell, who needs more experience and to hit the metaphorical books to learn the game a bit more, and Dickau have been disappointments. again with the man from Gonzaga though, maybe too high of hopes and decent NBA 2K7 ratings (he's starting for my dynasty over Jack because he can hit the three-ball) are clouding my view. shrug

Thought he would at least help us out this season but he has done nothing of the sort so far.

I am just waiting for him to blow up (which I don't think will be long) about his playing time.

Martell has redeemed himself somewhat in the last couple of games but would come in a close second.
